The opportunity

The Learning Engineer is responsible for developing and evaluating innovative solutions to complex learning challenges and opportunities across SNHU's Global Campus offerings. Specifically, this position focuses on emerging educational technologies, assessment techniques, student engagement strategies, academic research, research/experimentation design, and evolving models for digital education. Working collaboratively across numerous internal departments, the Learning Engineer leads research, prototyping, and evaluation efforts to explore new ideas, develop proof-of-concept solutions, and assess their potential for broader institutional adoption in support of SNHU's mission to deliver affordable, accessible, and high-quality education. The position requires broad expertise in instructional design, educational technology, assessment, learning sciences, user experience design, learning management systems, research methods, and the application of evidence-based practices to educational innovation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

•    Design and develop learning solutions drawing from research-based efforts in learning science and educational technology.
•    Manage complex design projects independently with small, agile teams.
•    Design rigorous testing approaches for the evaluation of strategic initiatives, including test protocols, evaluation instruments, measurement frameworks, hypotheses, success criteria, and decision points.
•    Partner with prototype teams as an embedded contributor to translate emerging instructional approaches and design challenges into structured experiments, testable iterations, and production-ready recommendations.
•    Convert applied research and emerging literature on AI, assessment, student engagement, and learning science into pilot designs, test plans, and operational playbooks that teams can implement directly.
•    Apply methodological rigor to pilot and prototype testing so that results are defensible, reusable, and actionable for decisions about scale, iteration, or discontinuation.

•    Integrate research-based practices from diverse populations of learners to ensure solutions are learner-centered and support personalization.
•    Analyze faculty needs across various faculty models to support the teaching and facilitation of the learning solution.
•    Integrate robust, well-aligned, and valid assessment methods across all aspects of the learning solution.
•    Develop technical specifications and use cases for leveraging appropriate technology to support learning.
•    Collaborate with user testing teams to evaluate the effectiveness of learning solutions through user testing, learner analysis, and feedback mechanisms.
•    Consult and provide support for development and continuous improvement teams to operationalize design models.
•    Collaborate with project stakeholders and teams to document and support efforts to move recommended learning solutions to scale.
•    Maintain a focus on impact toward sustainability, scalability, and feasibility in alignment with the university’s mission to increase affordability and access to education.
•    Collaborate with internal and external experts to maintain awareness around developments in the field of generative AI for application to online learning

Minimum Qualifications: 

•    Years of relevant or specific experience: Six years’ experience in instructional technology, instructional design, educational research, online program management, or related field.

•    Academic Degree(s) and/ areas of study: Bachelor’s degree in educational technology, instructional design, curriculum design, or educational psychology.

•    Equivalent of experience in lieu of degree acceptable:  ☐      Yes     ☒   No                     

•    Professional Certification(s): N/A

•    Demonstrated experience designing and conducting pilots, prototype evaluations, applied research activities, or experiments in education, including the development of test protocols, evaluation instruments, success measures, quantitative analysis, and evidence-based recommendations.

•    In-depth, practical knowledge, and experience with educational technology and systems: LMS systems, courseware platforms, and authoring/design tools (Articulate, Adobe, etc.).

•    Familiarity of online learning models, preferably in competency based programs and/or alternative learning models and pathways.

•    Confidence in presentation and facilitation skills with senior-level stakeholders.

•    Flexibility in relation to changing deadlines and project priorities.

•    Demonstrated experience leading diverse projects and people.

Preferred Qualifications:

•    Master’s degree or terminal degree in learning science, sociology, psychology, assessment or a related field.

•    Experience conducting applied education research in higher education settings.

Compensation

The annual pay range for this position is $66,211.00 - $105,958.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations. We expect this position to be hired in the following target hiring range $73,164.00 - $98,986.00.
