Anesthesia Technician

The Anesthesia Technician is responsible for assisting anesthesia providers by preparing, maintaining, and troubleshooting anesthesia-related equipment and supplies to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. This role supports routine and emergency procedures, maintains compliance with regulatory and infection control standards, and serves as a resource for anesthesia providers and perioperative staff.

Roles and Responsibilities

Clinical & Technical Support

  • Assists anesthesia providers with equipment setup and procedural support for routine and emergency cases.
  • Prepares anesthesia workstations, carts, and procedure locations before cases and clears them after use.
  • Ensures anesthesia equipment is clean, functional, and ready for use at all times.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the application, preparation, and troubleshooting of anesthesia-related equipment, including but not limited to anesthesia machines, ventilators, vaporizers, monitors, infusion pumps, blood warmers, Bair Huggers, and airway devices.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and performs minor repairs or coordinates service with Biomedical Engineering or equipment vendors as needed.

Equipment, Supplies & Inventory Management

  • Orders, stocks, tests, and maintains anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures anesthesia carts are stocked with appropriate quantities of required supplies.
  • Maintains adequate inventory levels and places orders to prevent shortages.
  • Regularly inspects supplies for expiration dates and rotates stock to ensure compliance.
  • Identifies opportunities for cost savings and process improvements and communicates recommendations to leadership.
  • Maintains anesthesia supply and storage areas in a clean and organized manner.

Education, Resources & Compliance

  • Maintains current knowledge of anesthesia equipment operation and functions.
  • Reviews, maintains, and provides access to equipment operation manuals.
  • Serves as a resource to anesthesia providers and nursing staff.
  • Assists with orientation and education of staff as needed and coordinates in-service training for new equipment.
  • Ensures operating rooms are properly supplied with required medical gases and places orders as needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of anesthesia gas safety practices.

Infection Control & Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintains AORN and ASA infection control standards for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing anesthesia equipment between cases and at the end of the day.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures established by the Infection Control Committee and regulatory agencies.

Administrative & General Responsibilities

  • Uses computer applications and automated systems (e.g., email, spreadsheets, word processing, databases) to perform job duties.
  • Accesses protected health information (PHI) in accordance with departmental and organizational policies.
  • Exercises independent judgment in rapidly changing patient care environments.
  • Performs other related or incidental duties as assigned to support department operations.
  • Attends meetings and conferences as required.

Required Skills and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Minimum of one (1) year of healthcare experience

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Certification is encouraged and supported by the organization

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • General mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot equipment.
  • Ability to understand medical terminology related to anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in high-stress situations.
  • Demonstrates initiative, sound judgment, manual dexterity, and motor coordination.
  • Ability to learn new skills and technologies.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to withstand physical and emotional stress inherent to the role.

Physical Requirements

Employees must be able to perform the essential physical functions of the position, including but not limited to:

  • Standing/Walking: Ability to stand and move for extended periods.
  • Lifting/Strength: Ability to lift more than 25 lbs and assist with patient positioning and transfers; ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
  • Mobility: Ability to kneel, bend, twist, reach overhead, and work in confined spaces; respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Coordination & Dexterity: Manual dexterity to assemble, operate, and transport equipment and gas tanks.
  • Sensory: Ability to read written materials and hear conversational speech.
  • Work Environment: May be exposed to infectious or contagious diseases and to blood or tissue-contaminated equipment; must maintain emotional and mental stability appropriate to job responsibilities.

Location and Travel Requirements

  • Onsite: Cayuga Medical Center: 101 Dates Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850
  • Shift: Days/Evenings
  • Travel: Local travel to off-site locations: Surgicare Center, Schuyler Hospital as needed for coverage

Pay Range Disclosure

  • $19.00 - $25.00
