Lab Operations – Member of Technical Staff – Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (In office)
Location: Kanata, ON

You will be required to work on site as the job and work demands. Occasional remote work is possible so long as our lab customers are being supported and you meet Wind River’s in-office requirements (currently 3 full days per week, although this could change). In rare instances you will be asked to provide some weekend and after-hours support to manage high priority alerts, release support, as well as critical and planned outages.

YOUR ROLE

The Lab Operations (LabOps) team provides internal support for Wind River’s engineering, development, sales, and support teams. We manage reliable labs, cloud environments, networks, systems, and embedded devices that enable our engineers to develop and test software globally, ensuring 24/7 accessibility.

LabOps supports a wide range of systems—from embedded boards to large cloud platforms—and is responsible for maintaining lab infrastructure to ensure reliable operation for engineers and automated test systems.

This Ottawa-based position focuses primarily on building, supporting, and managing cloud lab environments, with additional responsibilities involving Linux, VxWorks, Helix Hypervisor, servers, and embedded systems.

Typical tasks include setup and configuration (racking, cabling, RAC/ BMC/ iLO/ firmware/ BIOS updates), inventory management through NetBox, and other tools; plus, network diagramming of systems and all connections.

The role also involves managing remote access for engineering teams, configureing and installing embedded system boards and configuring network boot environments (e.g., DHCP, tftpd-hpa, PXE, gPXE, UEFI, U-Boot, and VxWorks boot loaders). You would additionally provide remote support to the labs in India, California and

other engineering sites.

Success in this position requires strong debugging skills, creativity, collaboration, and a continual drive to learn and improve. The work is physically active—you should be comfortable unboxing, lifting, and installing servers and lab infrastructure as required.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE

In your daily work, you will:

• Build and maintain cloud lab environments per engineering requirements.

• Design, build, and document network configurations (L2/L3, IPv4/IPv6) for cloud and embedded labs using Ethernet, DAC, and fiber connections.

• Configure and debug GPS and PTP systems.

• Set up and maintain servers through iDRAC, BMC, iLO, and related interfaces; manage firmware, BIOS, remote consoles, and SOL connections.

• Connect and document all network interfaces and physical connections.

• Follow security and safety best-practice guidelines when working with ladders, pallets, and heavy systems; ask for help when necessary.

• Configure embedded target access through RS232, serial console(s), USB serial, KVM, and SSH. Debug and use level shifters as required.

• Add and maintain detailed hardware and connectivity inventory in NetBox and other lab tools.

• Update and manage IPv4 and IPv6 DNS records for infrastructure and devices.

• Provide excellent customer support and assistance for all lab users.

• Install and support embedded targets, managing firmware and BIOS updates; handle static-sensitive devices with care. Support devices with BIOS, U-Boot, VxWorks boot loaders (Some labs require restricted security clearances, with strict access, data protection and citizenship requirements.)

• Configure Redfish, LLDP, VXLAN, and port-channels as required.

• Write simple scripts in Python, Bash, or Expect for automation and debugging tasks.

• Demonstrate advanced Linux command-line skills and familiarity with standard CLI tools.

• (Optional) Support lab infrastructure services such as NAT, NAT64, DNS64 (BIND), and Squid proxy.

• Track tasks and projects using Jira and GitLab.

Required Qualifications
• Computer Science, Computer Networking, Lab Management, Electrical Engineering, or IT degree/diploma

• Self-starter with a strong sense of ownership, commitment, and quality.

• 5-10 years of relevant experience with computers, networking, lab infrastructure, racks and embedded systems.

• Strong networking background with L2 and L3 protocols, VXLAN, PTP, to configure and support Ethernet networks.

• Build and support RF and GPS cabling.

• Ability to debug basic issues with a multimeter (DMM) or oscilloscope.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience documenting enterprise Linux platforms or embedded Linux systems.

• Familiarity with Yocto Project, custom Linux builds, or system integration workflows.

• Experience working with open-source Linux ecosystems and upstream documentation.

• Background in system administration, DevOps, or software development on Linux.

• Exposure to AI-assisted documentation tools, including LLMs or RAG systems.

• Knowledge of documentation UX, information architecture, and accessibility standards.
• Work carefully with delicate and ESD-sensitive devices and embedded systems.

• Have a positive attitude, be eager to share findings and work well with others

• Broad exposure to hardware, firmware, and networking technologies.

• Experience with electronics, network interfaces, embedded systems, desktop computers, and server hardware.

• Comfortable researching technical information independently.

• Motivated to find solutions but know when to collaborate and seek input.

• Physically capable of unboxing, installing, and maintaining lab equipment.

• Safety-conscious and meticulous about security.

• Proficient in creating clear network diagrams and configuration documentation.

• Mechanically inclined, with experience using hand tools and test equipment.

• Familiarity with Confluence, NetBox, Jira, GitLab, SharePoint, Visio, and Dell networking.

• Passionate about technology and continuous learning, fostering knowledge sharing within the team.

Compensation

This role is compensation range is between $97,800 to $122,200 CAD plus annual incentive plan bonus. Compensation is determined through interviews and a review of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities of the applicant, and equity with other team members.
