The role:

The Melbourne Environmental Division is seeking a full-time Asbestos Identifier to join our Asbestos Team at our Springvale, Victoria laboratory.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and develop into a future Team Leader.

The successful candidate will initially focus on hands-on asbestos identification and analysis while receiving ongoing mentoring, leadership development and support from the Laboratory Leadership Team and key stakeholders across the business.

For the right candidate, this role provides a clear pathway to take on increasing leadership responsibilities and help shape and lead the Asbestos section as their skills, experience and confidence develop.

The successful applicant will join a growing team responsible for the identification and analysis of asbestos in environmental and bulk material samples. They will also provide technical leadership, guidance and support to the Asbestos Team.

Key responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Perform asbestos identification using Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) in accordance with AS 4964, AS 5370, ALS Quality Work Instructions (QWIs) and laboratory procedures.

• Perform and assess asbestos fibre counting in accordance with applicable methodologies, maintaining high standards of analytical accuracy, technical competency and productivity.

• Coordinate and prioritise daily workloads for the Asbestos Team to meet required turnaround times and client requirements.

• Provide technical guidance, training, mentoring and competency development to Asbestos Identifiers, Fibre Counters and other laboratory staff.

• Monitor analytical quality and quality control (QC) performance, identifying, addressing and escalating technical or quality issues as required.

• Maintain accurate analytical, QC, training, competency and equipment records in accordance with ALS procedures.

• Maintain the Asbestos Laboratory, equipment and resources in a clean, safe, organised and operational condition, including completing required equipment maintenance.

• Communicate section workloads, performance, staffing and technical matters effectively to the Laboratory Manager.

• Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality, productivity, efficiency and turnaround times.

• Promote a strong safety, quality and team culture while supporting the ongoing development of a capable and appropriately trained Asbestos Team.

• Perform any other duties consistent with the level and scope of the position.

About you:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

• An understanding of AS 4964, AS 5370, laboratory quality requirements and ISO/IEC 17025 and NATA requirements.

• Previous experience working in a NATA-accredited production laboratory.

• Previous experience supervising, mentoring or coordinating a team.

• NATA Endorsed Signatory status for relevant asbestos identification and/or fibre-counting activities, or a willingness to obtain this accreditation.

• A relevant qualification in laboratory science, environmental science, microscopy, asbestos analysis or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated technical experience.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear technical direction, work effectively within a team and communicate with stakeholders across the business.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with excellent planning, organisation and workload-prioritisation abilities.

• A high level of attention to detail and a strong commitment to analytical quality and compliance.

• Competence in Microsoft Office and laboratory information management systems.

• The ability to work autonomously while contributing effectively to a team environment.

• A positive and proactive approach to training, staff development and continuous improvement.

• A strong commitment to laboratory safety and maintaining a positive HSE culture.

We are seeking an individual with well-developed communication, interpersonal, analytical and practical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to manage and prioritize workloads in a high-throughput production laboratory.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated and ready to step into a role that offers opportunities to further develop their hands-on laboratory skills, technical knowledge and leadership capabilities.
