Job Title: OB Tech; FT

Supervised by: Registered Nurse, Charge Nurse


Job Summary: The OB Tech supports the Labor and Delivery team by assisting in the care of mothers and newborns during the childbirth process. This includes preparing delivery rooms, maintaining sterile environments, assisting during deliveries (including cesarean sections), and providing post-delivery support. The OB Tech works under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

  • Prepare and maintain sterile environments for labor, delivery, and surgical procedures.
  • Assist physicians and nurses during vaginal deliveries and C-sections.
  • Set up and break down delivery and surgical rooms, including equipment sterilization.
  • Transport patients to and from the operating room or delivery suites.
  • Monitor and restock surgical and delivery supplies.
  • Handle and label specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Maintain accurate patient documentation and equipment logs.
  • Provide comfort measures and non-clinical support to patients and families.
  • Clean and prepare instruments and equipment for reuse.
  • Follow infection control and safety procedures at all times.
  • Meets communication needs of patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, within the Nursing Assistant’s scope of practice.
  • Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patient.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate to the nurse any observed changes in patient status and responses.
  • Provides explanation to patient and family prior to administering care to patient; answers questions within scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services within scope of practice.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers and physicians.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Responds to patients in emergencies or physically distressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within shift.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care under the direct supervision of an RN.

Requirements

Professional Requirements:

  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards.
  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
  • Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
  • Attends 12 staff meetings annually or reads and returns monthly staff meeting minutes.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • Preferred High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Surgical Technologist or OB Tech training program preferred.
  • Current BLS certification.

Language Skills:

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.

Skills:

  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Prior Experience in Labor & Delivery or as a Surgical/OB Tech preferred.
  • Experience in a hospital or acute care setting.
  • Knowledge of sterile techniques and surgical instruments.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • Compassionate and patient focused.

Physical Demands:

  • Mobility, sight, hearing, verbal communication, changes in temperature, exposure to disagreeable elements, exposure to biological, mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards. Frequent standing and walking. Lift up to 100 pounds. Carrying up to 40 pounds. Pushing/pulling up to 450 pounds.
  • This position is a safety sensitive position pursuant to Amendment 98 to the Arkansas Constitution § 2(25).
