Job Summary The Clinical Toxicology Fellowship provides advanced training for pharmacists in the triage management of human toxic exposures. Responsibilities include assessment, evaluation, disposition and patient/provider education through statewide emergency call services using evidence-based clinical software systems. The fellowship provides training that contributes toward eligibility for Diplomate of the American Board of Applied Toxicology (DABAT) certification. Essential Functions - Collaboration/Advocacy. Provides callers with health care management information and education. Collaborates with the on-call physician with appropriate clinical questions and concerns. - Completes call documentation according to national and department standards. - Patient Assessment. Utilizes knowledge of neonatal, infant, toddler, school age, adolescent and/or adult pathophysiology and growth and development to assess current presenting problem. Completes accurate assessments in a time frame consistent with patient condition. - Interprets data collected through assessment. Provides quality safe care according to acuity, reassessment, override and when guideline does not fit specific situation. - Provides emotional support and accepts caller’s emotional responses. - Identifies own individual learning needs and seeks assistance and direction in meeting them. Participates in clinical, professional and department responsibilities. May provide outreach education in poison prevention to community. - Understands the limitations of telemedicine and develops a telephone style which utilizes varied communication techniques to gather and provide information. - Conducts and applies toxicology research, critical literature review and biostatistics to real-world problems. Education: - Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy with completion of all required internship hours required or - Terminal Degree (PhD, MD, etc.) in Pharmacy and completion of all required internship hours required Experience: - 2+ years clinical experience in acute, ambulatory or pediatric setting preferred - previous experience in an AAPCC certified poison center preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Possess basic counseling skills with ability to project in a confident, professional and empathetic manner. - Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. - Demonstrated ability to calculate complex mathematical equations in order to calculate the toxic dose of a substance. - Knowledge of basic community services. - Requires ability to focus on callers and problem solve emergency situations. - Requires ability to comfortably make recommendations of medical management to physicians regarding toxic exposures. - Requires the ability to take high acuity/critical care calls that directly impact patient care. - Organized and able to set priorities and able to work effectively with minimum supervision. - Proficient data entry skills with accuracy and speed. - Personal computer skills.
