General Purpose of Job:

The Ultrasound Coordinator utilizes high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to produce and evaluate ultrasound images that are used by physicians to render medical diagnosis. They assist with the daily technical operations of diagnostic ultrasound under the supervision of the Radiologists, Radiology Director, and Manager.

The Ultrasound Coordinator is responsible for work schedules in Ultrasound.  They will assign duties, supervise, instruct, and evaluate the clinical performance of their immediate personnel. They will stay informed of ongoing developments and issues within the department and institution by actively participating in various departmental/hospital meetings and committees.

He or she will perform administrative duties, as well as perform ultrasounds, as needed.   They will maintain clinical competency in Ultrasound as well as Radiography if applicable.

The Ultrasound Coordinator will perform other duties as deemed necessary.

• Maintains a quality assurance program that includes quality control procedures to insure safe and effective equipment operation, including electrical and mechanical hazards
• Documents equipment performance service, maintenance and configuration changes
• Serves as departmental representative on the Del Mar College Advisory Committee on Ultrasound technology
• Supervises overall job performances of Sonographers
• Assist in counseling staff in regard to performance, conduct attendance and other related matters
• Prepares Sonographers work/call schedule
• Assists with evaluating work performance of Sonographers
• Ensures that new sonographers receive proper orientation and three month evaluation
• Supervises the technical aspects of ultrasound procedures and maintains prescribed standards
• Assists in developing/maintaining ultrasound procedure manual
• Serves as a resource and support person for sonographers
• Assists in resolving inter and inter departmental problems relating to diagnostic ultrasound section
• Lends his/her expertise to staff sonographers when needed in performing highly difficult of complicated procedures
• Performs weekly inventory of area supplies, orders needed items via computer
• Prepares purchase order requests for non-inventory items, forward to Director/Assistant Director for authorization prior to sending M.M. for purchase
• Maintains the section in full compliance with all requirements of ACR certification for ultrasound facilities
• Performs all duties of diagnostic sonographer and radiographer
• Reviews medical record and uses personal patient/parent interview to obtain significant clinical information and historical facts, which may affect the sonographic examination
• Provides basic patient care and comfort including good infection control practices, including good hand washing technique, appropriate use of standard precautions

• Consistently provides the best image quality within the limitations of available resources and patient clinical status
• Recognize significant clinical information and historical facts from the patient and medical record, which may affect the sonographic examination
• Identifies life threatening situations and responds appropriately
• Uses oral and written communication skills to interact with interpreting physician
• Recognize the sonographic appearance of normal and abnormal tissue structures
• Notifies appropriate physician of findings that may require immediate clinical response
• Recognize and compensate for acoustic artifact
• Supervises overall job performances of Sonographers
• Able to performs radiography if licensed with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as a radiographer (ARRT RT(R) and with the Texas Medical Board as a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist (CMRT)
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Quality Performance Responsibilities:

• Ensures that self and sonographers assists in the collection of pertinent information regarding equipment, the procedures and the work environment
• Ensures that self and sonographers assists in the collection of pertinent data regarding departmental Process Improvement activities
• Ensures that services are performed in a safe environment  in accordance with established guidelines
• Ensures that equipment maintenance and operation comply with established guidelines
• Assesses equipment to determine acceptable performance based on established guidelines
• Ensures that self and sonographers review protocol and procedure manuals as well as Safety, Risk Management, Radiation Safety and other pertinent manuals on at least an annual basis
• Analysis information collected and recommends whether changes need to be made to equipment, procedures or work environment, discusses any recommended changes with appropriate supervisor.
• Ensures that self and sonographers instructs students regarding sonographic policies and procedures
• Ensures that self and sonographers assists in performing quality  assurance activities based on established quality protocols

Education and/or Experience:

• Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school in radiologic technology.
• Additional training as a Medical Diagnostic Sonographer (Typically 12–18 mos.)
• 2-3 years pediatric sonographer experience in a hospital setting

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)
• Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as a Registered Radiologic Technologist (RT-R) if performing radiography
• Current unlimited license with the Texas Medical Board as a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist (CMRT) if performing radiography
• Current CPR Certification
