Job Description Summary
The Lead Engineer – Mechanical Engineering will lead the design, integration, and interface management of key mechanical drivetrain subsystems while providing critical technical support for the global wind fleet. This role is responsible for defining subsystem scope, managing interfaces, and driving robust integration across gearbox-related systems. Additionally, the engineer will act as a technical bridge between design and the field, performing onsite inspections, supporting complex maintenance activities, and executing root cause analyses to ensure the reliability and serviceability of the drivetrain across our wind turbine fleet.Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
- Design & Integration (70-80%):
- Lead mechanical engineering activities for drivetrain subsystem integration, including gearbox internals, cooling systems, and low-speed shaft couplings.
- Define, document, and manage physical and non-physical interfaces across adjacent systems and assemblies.
- Drive technical alignment across controls, structures, manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and service teams to ensure design robust-ness.
- Develop and maintain engineering change records and design requirements to meet cost, performance, and manufacturability targets.
- Fleet Support & Site Operations (20-30%):
- Conduct technical site inspections of gearboxes and drivetrain assemblies to assess condition and identify wear patterns or failure modes.
- Provide onsite technical support for complex maintenance activities, troubleshooting, and corrective repairs at wind farm locations.
- Lead field-based root cause investigations and validation activities; translate field data and “lessons learned” into engineering design improvements.
- Act as a technical consultant for regional service teams, providing guidance on drivetrain health monitoring, maintenance procedures, and component lifing.
- Support the transition of new designs to service, ensuring field readiness, documentation accuracy, and proper training for service technicians.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- Experience in mechanical engineering, subsystem design, or product integration.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical workstreams or owning complex mechanical assemblies.
- Ability to travel to wind turbine sites (up to 25%) for inspections and onsite support.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- Experience with wind turbine drivetrain systems, gearbox systems, cooling systems, or shaft coupling assemblies.
- Familiarity with nacelle integration and large rotating equipment.
- Experience with design validation, DFMEA, root cause analysis, and engineering change management.
- Experience with CAD and product lifecycle management tools.
Desired Characteristics
- Strong systems mindset and technical leadership.
- Proven ability to lead through ambiguity and drive decisions with rigor.
- High ownership, accountability, and execution focus.
- Strong collaboration skills across cross-functional teams.
- Commitment to quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
