Overview

ROLE AT A GLANCE: The Principal Scientist, Toxicology will provide technical support in substantiating the safety of ingredients, formulas and packaging used in Herbalife inner and outer nutrition products in all stages of product lifecycle to support sustainable business growth. The Principal Scientist, Toxicology will work independently to conduct safety evaluation of ingredients, formulations and packaging, prepare appropriate documentation that meets standards and requirements for product safety and regulatory acceptability.  This position will work closely with a wide range of regional and corporate teams across organization to ensure safety compliance of Herbalife products worldwide.

 

In addition, this position is expected to participate in external trade and science-based initiatives pertaining to the safety of product categories relevant to Herbalife business and leverage external partners to advance the science and brand of Herbalife products. The Principal Scientist is a key position in R&D and must inspire and energize employees through advanced knowledge of toxicology, personal leadership, influence, and thorough planning and drive for timely and appropriate results. This position may need to travel globally up to 10% of time.

 

HOW YOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT: •    Critically review, validate and summarize scientific evidence for assessing safety of proposed product formulas and materials (including food and dietary ingredients, additives, personal care ingredients, and their constituents) and provide recommendations to address evidence gaps (if any) to support product development and innovation with minimum supervision.•    Develop safety substantiation for Herbalife’s ingredients and finished products, and prepare written technical reports (e.g. risk assessments, safety monographs, etc.) that meet Herbalife internal standards and regulatory acceptability.•    Use published toxicological frameworks and regulatory guidance documents to perform and review hazard, safety and risk assessments to meet applicable regulatory requirements.•    Prepare responses to inquiries regarding the safety of Herbalife’s ingredients and products from regulatory bodies and customers in the local countries where Herbalife products are marketed.•    Lead and provide support in the design, conduct and evaluation of toxicology studies on existing and new ingredients and formulations with training.•    Lead stakeholder in preparation of requisite toxicological requirements for GRAS dossier preparation for North America and Novel Foods applications for Europe. •    Guide and review the development of safety-based specifications for raw materials and finished products, and advisory label statement review process.•    Communicate product and ingredient safety information verbally and in writing to internal customers, including Formulation, Scientific Affairs, Government Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, and Post-market Safety Surveillance departments.•    Perform risk assessment and modeling of chemicals using established toxicological databases and tools such as OHAT systematic review, Benchmark Dose Software, Tox21, AOP and QSAR Toolbox under guidance.•    Remain abreast of current risk assessment methodologies and toxicological sciences relevant to Herbalife product categories and communicate emerging topics and potential implications to internal stakeholders.•    Represent Herbalife’s key business interests on trade association task forces, identify and pursue external Key Opinion Leaders for research collaboration opportunities, and support strategic external engagement with scientific and regulatory communities.•    Communicate critical issues to direct manager and other relevant parties in a timely manner, with recommended solutions including timelines and required resources.•    Follows Company policies, processes and procedures, and performs all duties in an honest, ethical and professional manner. •    Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:

Education•    Master or Doctorate Degree in Toxicology, Pharmacology, or related discipline

 

Experience•    10 years of experience in toxicology research, nutrient risk assessment, food safety and/or personal care safety assessment areas. Experience gained before or after earning advanced degree will be accepted. •    Proven records of achieving positive results and adding recognized and quantitative value to business•    Successful track record of completing safety-based tasks including product/ingredient reviews•    Has achieved positive results and adding recognized and quantitative corporate value

 

Skills/Certifications •    A broad knowledge of toxicology and its application to safety evaluation and risk assessment in food, supplements and/or personal care industry•    Working knowledge of toxicity testing methods and applicable regulatory standards•    Good understanding of emerging toxicological tools and risk assessment approaches •    Ability in interpreting, applying and translating complex scientific data (i.e., analytical and toxicological) for practical business use•    Ability to quickly acquire and apply new areas of scientific knowledge and share such information in a clear manner to a variety of stakeholders•    Ability to solve problems in a practical, timely and collaborative manner with adequate attention to detail•    Ability to work under pressure, adapt, navigate and thrive in a dynamic environment with changing priorities, and meet urgent deadlines •    Able to work in a team environment, including cross-functional and multicultural teams•    Solid communication skills, both written and verbal in English in all platforms •    Good project management skills, self-motivated and capable of working autonomously•    Ability to prioritize, plan and execute complex projects including delegating parts to others as needed •    Competent use of MS Office programs and technologies for remote teamwork and communication•    History of achieving positive results and adding corporate value. •    Ability to navigate a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders Ability to coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback upon reviewing safety-based reviews written by others
