About this Role

Quanta Power Solutions is seeking an experienced Instrumentation Designer III to perform advanced instrumentation and control system design for power generation, renewable energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), data centers, substations, transmission, and industrial infrastructure projects. This position is responsible for independently executing complex design assignments, developing detailed construction packages, and providing technical guidance to junior designers while supporting Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) project execution.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in instrumentation design, industrial control systems, and multidiscipline coordination within industrial and power generation environments.

What You'll Do

Instrumentation Design & Development

  • Independently develop instrumentation and control system design deliverables for EPC projects.
  • Prepare, review, and coordinate:
    • Instrument location plans
    • Instrument installation details
    • Loop diagrams
    • Wiring and interconnection diagrams
    • Junction box layouts
    • Cable schedules
    • Instrument indexes
    • Control panel and marshalling cabinet layouts
    • Instrument cable routing plans
    • P&ID markups and revisions
    • Control system interface drawings
  • Create detailed construction packages utilizing engineering specifications, calculations, vendor documentation, and project requirements.
  • Ensure instrumentation designs support constructability, maintainability, safety, and operational requirements.

Advanced Design & Modeling

  • Utilize AutoCAD, Revit, Plant 3D, Navisworks, and related design platforms to develop detailed engineering drawings and models.
  • Participate in 3D model development and interdisciplinary design reviews.
  • Develop complex instrumentation layouts and equipment arrangements.
  • Support BIM coordination and clash detection activities.
  • Maintain compliance with company drafting standards and project requirements.

Instrumentation Systems Design

  • Support the design and layout of:
    • Pressure, temperature, flow, and level instrumentation
    • Analytical instrumentation systems
    • Control valve assemblies
    • Instrument air systems
    • PLC, DCS, and SCADA interfaces
    • Process automation systems
    • Field instrumentation networks
  • Assist engineers with instrument installation requirements and control system integration.
  • Develop material take-offs (MTOs) and quantity estimates for procurement and construction activities.

Project Execution

  • Execute instrumentation design activities throughout conceptual design, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Monitor assigned deliverables and ensure alignment with project schedules and budgets.
  • Review vendor drawings, equipment packages, and technical documentation.
  • Support engineering scope development and project planning activities.
  • Identify design challenges and recommend practical solutions.

Multidisciplinary Coordination

  • Coordinate instrumentation design activities with electrical, mechanical, process, civil, structural, and construction teams.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews and constructability assessments.
  • Resolve design interface issues and drawing conflicts.
  • Ensure instrumentation systems are properly integrated into overall facility designs.

Construction & Field Support

  • Conduct field verification activities and site walkdowns.
  • Support responses to Requests for Information (RFIs) and field design questions.
  • Revise drawings based on field conditions and as-built requirements.
  • Support startup and commissioning activities through design clarification and technical assistance.
  • Participate in equipment installation reviews and construction progress meetings.

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Instrumentation Designer I and II personnel.
  • Review junior designer work for accuracy, quality, and adherence to standards.
  • Assist in training and development of design team members.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and development of design best practices.
  • Promote safety, quality, and engineering excellence throughout project execution.

Quality & Standards

  • Ensure compliance with company engineering standards, drafting procedures, and project specifications.
  • Perform quality checks and peer reviews of instrumentation design deliverables.
  • Maintain project documentation and revision control requirements.
  • Support quality assurance and quality control programs.
  • Participate in lessons learned and process improvement initiatives.

What You'll Bring

Education & Experience

  • Associate degree in Drafting Technology, Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Technology, or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 5–8 years of instrumentation design experience in industrial, utility, power generation, renewable energy, or EPC environments.
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary engineering projects and construction execution.
  • Experience with large industrial facilities, power plants, data centers, or energy infrastructure projects preferred.

 

Advanced Knowledge Of:

  • Industrial instrumentation systems and installation practices.
  • Instrumentation symbols, standards, and drafting conventions.
  • Instrument loop design and wiring practices.
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • PLC, DCS, and SCADA system interfaces.
  • Instrument cable routing and raceway systems.
  • Industrial construction and commissioning practices.

Software Proficiency

  • Plant 3D.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Preferred Experience With:

  • SmartPlant Instrumentation.
  • Aveva Instrumentation.
  • BIM coordination platforms.
  • Electronic document management systems.

Familiarity With:

  • ISA standards.
  • NEC requirements.
  • Industrial and power generation facility design standards
  • EPC project workflows and deliverable requirements.
