Position Summary

The 80/20 Extrusion Designer / Product Specialist is the primary resource for Carolina Fluid Components' T-slot aluminum framing product line. This role is responsible for designing custom structural solutions, producing accurate quotes, and supporting customers from initial inquiry through order placement. The ideal candidate combines mechanical aptitude with strong customer service skills and a working knowledge of the 80/20 Inc. product catalog, configurator tools, and AutoCAD 3D.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering Support

  • Develop custom T-slot aluminum frame and structural designs using the 80/20 Inc. configurator and AutoCAD 3D.
  • Interpret customer requirements and translate them into complete bills of material (BOMs) and drawings.
  • Select appropriate profile series, hardware, fasteners, and accessories for each application.
  • Review designs for load-bearing adequacy, joint selection, and practical assembly.

Quoting & Order Management

  • Prepare accurate, timely quotes including profile, hardware, freight, and lead time.
  • Manage the quote-to-order process end-to-end, coordinating with purchasing and customer service as needed.
  • Apply correct pricing tiers, quantity breaks, and freight rules.
  • Follow up on open quotes and support the outside sales team on larger opportunities.

Customer Interaction

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for 80/20 design inquiries via phone and email.
  • Conduct design consultations with customers, understanding application requirements and constraints.
  • Provide technical guidance on profile selection, tolerances, and assembly methods.
  • Build and maintain relationships with repeat customers and accounts.

Product & Process Knowledge

  • Maintain current knowledge of the 80/20 Inc. product line including new profiles, hardware, and accessories.
  • Document designs, quotes, and customer application notes for future reference.
  • Support continuous improvement of quoting templates, design standards, and internal processes.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD 3D for structural design and drawing production.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to read and interpret drawings and BOMs.
  • Strong attention to detail in quoting and design work
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook)
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple open quotes and projects simultaneously.

Preferred

  • Experience with 80/20 Inc. products and the 80/20 configurator
  • Background in drafting, mechanical design, fabrication, or industrial distribution
  • Familiarity with T-slot aluminum framing applications (machine guarding, workstations, conveyors, etc.)
  • Experience with an ERP system (Prophet 21 or similar)
