Macquarie University Hospital is seeking experienced Registered Nurses to join our Day Surgery Unit, based at Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde. Our Day Surgery Unit supports a broad and high-quality surgical case mix, and our nursing team is central to the safe, efficient and reassuring experience our patients have on the day of their procedure. Enrolled Nurses with relevant experience will be considered also.

These roles are well suited to nurses who enjoy the pace and variety of day surgery, and who take pride in delivering care that is both technically sound and genuinely compassionate. You will work across the full patient journey – from pre-operative assessment and admission, through to procedural support, recovery, discharge planning and patient education, with the backing of a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

Both permanent full-time and permanent part-time positions are available, and we welcome applications from nurses seeking flexibility. Rosters are Monday to Friday, with possible alternating Saturdays and no night duty.

About the Role

As a nurse in our Day Surgery Unit, you will provide safe, evidence-based perioperative care to patients and their families at every stage of their surgical journey. Working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists and nursing colleagues, you will help ensure procedures run smoothly and that patients feel informed, supported and well cared for from admission through to discharge.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Providing patient care in accordance with documented care and treatment plans, prioritising workload based on patient needs, acuity and optimal timing for intervention

  • Completing pre-operative assessments and admissions, and preparing patients for theatre in collaboration with the surgical and anaesthetic team

  • Monitoring and managing patients through post-operative recovery, escalating clinical concerns appropriately and preparing patients for safe discharge

  • Providing clear education and compassionate support to patients, families and carers throughout the surgical journey

  • Ensuring all clinical documentation is accurate, professional and completed in a timely manner in accordance with Macquarie University Health policy

  • Participating in quality improvement activity, including policy review and development, and contributing positively to team goals and excellence in care delivery

About You

To be considered, you will demonstrate:

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse (Enrolled Nurses with current AHPRA registration will be considered also)

  • A minimum of two years' post-registration experience, ideally within a Day Surgery Unit, perioperative or recovery setting (highly desirable)

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with a proven ability to prioritise and multitask in a fast-paced environment and during critical incidents

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and exercise sound independent professional judgement and critical thinking, and to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Well-developed computer skills, including the use of electronic medical records systems, Microsoft Word, Excel and web-based research

  • Availability to work a Monday to Friday roster, with flexibility for possible alternating Saturdays
