JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Patient Care - Personally accountable for providing patient and employee safety at all times. Utilizes safe practices and procedures in surgical patient care. Assists co-workers in resolution and improves upon active and potential patient and employee safety issues. Reviews surgery plan and appropriately prepares for procedure based on expert knowledge. Contacts Perioperative Coordinators and/or Lead Certified Surgical Technologist if additions and/or changes need to be made. Identifies ideas to improve upon surgery plan and act as resource for clarity about the plan as needed. Demonstrates understanding of expert technical skills required to provide care to patients and families and the ability to effectively perform the skills. Proficiency in advanced surgical technique, procedures, and instrumentation. Independently scrubs surgical procedures in all surgical specialties and serves as a resource to coworkers and other OR staff.  Demonstrates ability to anticipate and address problems in relation to the procedure being performed. Demonstrates the ability to make appropriate decisions, prioritize planned and unplanned events. Acts as a resource for anticipating the needs of the surgical team when providing patient care. Procedure preparation is focused on cost effective provision of supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care with positive outcomes. Resource for cost containment practices and contributes to improvement opportunities for cost effective care. Participates in training programs to attain and maintain competency in complex cases and procedures.   Works with Educator Specialists within department to assist in education coordination and precepting of a Surgical Technologists. Provides expert approach to equipment safety, use of technology, computers and robotics as applicable to procedure type, by troubleshooting equipment issues and participation in vendor demonstrations. Monitor equipment to ensure compliance with instructions for use and appropriate action taken. Applies superior knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology / Specialty of whole organ transplantation, vascular system/structures for optimum surgical patient care. Applies expert knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures.

• Leadership - Engages in safety culture with active participation in regulatory requirements and patient safety huddles. Facilitates learning by assisting with peer, orientee, and student learning experiences. Actively works with department leadership and council representatives to identify, share, implement and evaluate safety best practices. Supports the leadership in efforts of the department and CCHMC and serves as a mentor and resources to others. Provides leadership in improving upon the competence of staff. Works with leadership to meet and sustain the regulatory compliance efforts of the department and hospital. Ensures individual certification and other unit/hospital requirements are fulfilled in a timely basis. Communicates safety and compliance concerns to leadership team members. Active involvement in one departmental/hospital committee. Active involvement with at least one process improvement team/committee / Specialty: project involvement on specialty and/or hospital wide committee involvement. Participate in continuing education opportunities outside expectations of unit and hospital. Maintains awareness of personal growth and development. Accurately identifies one's competence, using this knowledge to identify related resources. Shares professional development learnings with others to promote safe patient care. Expert preceptor and mentor to orientees/students in the scrub position. Acts as expert clinical resources within the Perioperative Department and for specialty procedures as applicable. Helps create annual education/PPT for CST's. As applicable, works with other Specialty Teams, assists with training in combo cases and serves as a resource for multi-disciplinary cases.

Supports, promotes an atmosphere of cooperation, respect and trust within the team providing guidance in complicated situations based on best practices. Identifies issues/opportunities with the goal of improving patient outcomes and staff satisfaction. Collaborates and is responsive to day-to-day needs of co-workers. Demonstrates guidance, provides coaching, and instills awareness of best practices with team. Identifies findings/opportunities that will further benefit team collaboration.

• Compliance - Patient Services Staff- Sustain a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Support leadership in Compliance efforts to meet and sustain the regulatory compliance efforts of the department and hospital. Be mindful and judicious in monitoring safety and departmental policies and procedures. Ensure all individual certifications and Safety College requirements are fulfilled in a timely basis. Work with department managers to identify and share safety best practices. Be mindful of CCHMCs processes and compliance with CMS standards and freely communicate safety and compliance concerns to leadership team members.

• Exhibits advocacy & moral agency - Works on behalf of patient, family, and community; advocates from patient/family perspective, whether similar to or different from personal values; suspends rules - patient and family drive moral decision-making; empowers the patient and family to speak for/represent themselves; achieves mutuality within patient/professional relationships. Uses diversity resources available both internally and in the community to enhance the experience of care for the diverse patient populations. Incorporates differences, including alternative therapies into care; tailors care to the extent possible. Demonstrates efforts to grow self and others in cultural competence.

Successfully completed the orientation process in assigned surgical department. Demonstrates expert knowledge and practice of patient care surgical procedure concepts as a certified surgical technologist.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate degree in surgical technology from an Allied Health Education Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) OR Associate degree in surgical technology from a program accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES) OR Formal military training in surgical technology from the Army, Navy, or Air Force (68D Surgical Technology Training [Army], Hospital Corpsman [Navy], Surgical Services Specialist [Air Force])

• 5+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

• Completed minimum of 5 years in specialty (CTOR, Transplant, Fetal)

• Preferred: Employed by a CCHMC perioperative department 2+ years.

• Maintains certification by participating in continuing education activities.
• Meets the criteria stated in level I & II.
