Project and Corporate Accountant

Type: In-Office, Full-Time

About Our Client

Our client is a well-established, family-owned Alberta company with more than four decades of experience transforming outdoor spaces across the Edmonton region. What began as a local landscaping business has grown into a diversified organization providing landscape design and construction, commercial and municipal landscaping, residential services, fencing, tree care, landscaping supplies, garden centres and related services.

With a reputation built on craftsmanship, service and long-term relationships, the organization has become a trusted partner for homeowners, builders, developers, commercial clients and municipalities. Its work can be seen throughout the region, including major public and community projects, while its vertically integrated operations provide a unique combination of design, construction, materials, horticulture and ongoing landscape services.

The company is guided by a commitment to making lives better through quality work, genuine care and a strong sense of accountability. Employees are encouraged to be committed to one another, driven to succeed, focused on delivering top-quality results and committed to doing the right thing.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced accounting professional to join a growing organization where the work extends well beyond traditional accounting. The Project and Corporate Accountant will have visibility across multiple areas of the business, playing an important role in project profitability, financial reporting, cost control and operational decision-making. For someone who enjoys understanding the story behind the numbers and working closely with operational leaders, this role offers meaningful exposure and the opportunity to make a tangible impact.

Key Responsibilities

As the Project and Corporate Accountant, you will provide accurate, timely financial information across both project operations and the broader organization. You will work closely with project managers, operations leaders and senior management to ensure financial performance is clearly understood, costs are properly captured and the business has the information it needs to make sound decisions.

Project Accounting & Job Costing

  • Monitor project financial performance from start to finish, ensuring revenues, costs, commitments and margins are accurately captured and reported.
  • Review project costs and investigate variances between budgets, forecasts and actual results, identifying trends or issues that require attention.
  • Work closely with project managers and operational teams to ensure costs are coded appropriately and financial information accurately reflects project progress.
  • Support project billing, including progress billings, change orders, holdbacks, cost recoveries and other project-related transactions.
  • Assist with work-in-progress reporting and provide meaningful financial analysis to help management understand project profitability and performance.
  • Identify potential cost overruns, margin erosion or other financial risks and communicate concerns proactively to the appropriate stakeholders.

Corporate Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and maintain accurate general ledger accounts, account reconciliations, journal entries and supporting documentation.
  • Participate in month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring financial information is complete, accurate and delivered on schedule.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements, management reports and financial analysis.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts and other key financial accounts while investigating and resolving discrepancies.
  • Support the preparation of budgets, forecasts and financial models that help leadership evaluate business performance and future opportunities.
  • Maintain strong financial controls and ensure accounting practices are consistent, accurate and well documented.

Accounts Receivable, Payables & Cash Flow

  • Work collaboratively with the accounting and operations teams to monitor accounts receivable, customer balances and outstanding project billings.
  • Assist with accounts payable processes, ensuring vendor invoices are accurately coded, approved and matched to the appropriate projects or corporate accounts.
  • Monitor collections and help identify potential cash-flow concerns, disputed invoices or delayed payments.
  • Support accurate cash-flow forecasting by maintaining visibility into receivables, payables, project commitments and upcoming financial obligations.

Analysis & Business Partnership

  • Provide project managers and operational leaders with clear financial information that helps them make informed decisions.
  • Develop and maintain reports that highlight project profitability, cost trends, budget performance and key financial indicators.
  • Translate financial data into practical insights, helping non-financial stakeholders understand what the numbers mean for their projects and the business.
  • Investigate unusual transactions, variances and financial trends and recommend practical solutions.
  • Look for opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy and financial visibility across the organization.

Process Improvement & Collaboration

  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve reporting and strengthen financial controls.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to improve the flow and accuracy of financial information from project initiation through completion.
  • Help establish consistent processes for project cost tracking, reporting and financial documentation.
  • Maintain organized and audit-ready financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Contribute to a collaborative accounting environment where accuracy, accountability and continuous improvement are valued.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate:

Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related discipline.
  • Several years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within construction, landscaping, contracting, project-based services or another job-costing environment.
  • Experience with project accounting, job costing, work-in-progress reporting and project billing is strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting month-end and year-end financial reporting processes.
  • A professional accounting designation or progress toward a CPA is considered an asset.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience with job costing, project profitability analysis and variance reporting.
  • Strong Excel skills and the ability to work confidently with financial data, reconciliations and reporting.
  • Experience working with accounting or ERP systems; experience with integrated project and accounting systems is an asset.
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of financial information and identify meaningful trends, discrepancies and opportunities.
  • Strong understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger and account reconciliation processes.

Key Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a natural curiosity about the story behind the numbers.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • A proactive approach to identifying issues and resolving them before they become larger problems.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with project managers, operations teams and senior leadership.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where priorities can evolve.
  • High level of integrity, accountability and discretion when handling financial information.
  • A practical, business-minded approach with the confidence to ask questions, challenge discrepancies and recommend improvements.
