The Department of Planning and Permitting, Planning Divisionis hiring for a Planner III in Honolulu to assist in planning assignments by reviewing simple applications, performing research, tracking consultant services contracts, and drafting documents and presentations.

What You'll Do
  • Process simple applications involving zone changes and zoning district boundary adjustments by drafting memos and letters, conducting the technical research and analysis of the application, reviewing draft recommendations for action, drafting portions of the director's report, preparing exhibits, maps, tables and other graphic displays, and notifying the applicant of final action.
  • Perform technical research and evaluation of projects of a simple level.
  • Assist the branch chief or senior planner in managing consultant services contracts by helping to execute contract documents and reviewing invoices.


***Salary for the Department of Planning and Permitting:  $5,512 per month (SR-20), includes shortage differential***

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with major work in city planning, sociology, business or public administration or a related field.  

Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree. 

For example:
1. Four (4) years of professional work experience, in any occupation, may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.
2. Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional level) in conduct and compilation of surveys, studies, and/or statistical data may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
One (1) year of research or analytical experience in social, economic or community development programs.  

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures; standard sources and uses of socio-economic information; socio-economic problems and conditions; basic objectives and principles of community planning; and the ability to conduct research and statistical studies; collect, classify and analyze statistical data; prepare tables, charts and graphs; and prepare clear and concise reports.

Substitution:  A Master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Social Sciences, Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for the required one year of professional work experience in research or analytical experience in social, economic or community development programs.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:  
Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license (Type 3/automobile), as required. The current vacancy does not require a driver's license.
