Summary

Equipment Operator I

Responsible for performing semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of streets and alleys.

Equipment Operator II

Under direct supervision responsible for performing semi-skilled operation of light to medium equipment in the repair and maintenance of streets, alleys and drainage systems

Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Equipment Operator I: $16.50 - 22.50

Equipment Operator II: $17.03 - 24.42

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Equipment Operator I

  • Operate 12-yard dump truck.

  • Identify equipment needs for each assigned project. Transport all equipment and materials between job sites.

  • Maintain street and alley pavement by:

  • level lifting distressed areas utilizing polyurethane injection equipment

  • patching distressed areas with hot and cold asphalt material

  • sealing joints and cracks by applying a hot tar sealant

  • May operate heavy equipment in clearing of streets and/or alleys during foul weather incidents.

  • Operate/train on specialized pieces of heavy equipment in the absence of Heavy Equipment Operator.

  • Address citizen concerns on the job site.

  • Inspect the overall safety of various job projects. Maintain safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.

  • Attend safety meetings on a monthly basis.

  • Ensure all safety equipment is being utilized on a daily basis.

  • Inspect and maintain assigned equipment. Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections and complete daily work sheet for equipment operated.

  • Keep work location and vehicle(s) in order.

  • Operate light equipment required in the upkeep and operation of the areas of responsibility.

Equipment Operator II

  • Operates basic to moderately complex equipment including: 12-yard dump truck, patch truck, rubber tire loader, skid steer, mini excavator, steel wheel roller, crack seal machine, and rubber tire roller

  • Transport equipment and materials to and between job sites using haul trailers.

  • Performs various street/alley maintenance activities including: crack sealing, pavement patch repair, grading/blading dirt alley easements, base repair, and asphalt overlay

  • Sets up and inspects traffic control devices on work sites for compliance with safety requirements.

  • Regularly performs cleaning, routine maintenance, and minor repairs to equipment

  • Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections

  • Prepares records documenting productivity and equipment operated Uses various hand tools to support work activities

  • Assists with evaluating service requests to define scope of work

  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays to support inclement weather response, city initiatives or special events.

  • Operate/train on specialized pieces of heavy equipment in the absence of Heavy Equipment Operator.

Minimum Qualifications

Equipment Operator I

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

  • 6 months experience

Equipment Operator II

  • 1 year of experience operating equipment and machinery

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance requirements of power-driven equipment

  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices

  • Knowledge in care, operation and maintenance of various power tools and equipment

  • Knowledge of maintenance and safety requirements for light to heavy construction equipment

  • Knowledge of work zone safety and traffic control requirements

  • Knowledge of tactics and techniques in street maintenance operations

  • Skill in operating light and moderate construction equipment

  • Skill in using an iPad for review and entry of work order data

  • Skill in effective oral and written communication

  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools

  • Ability to exercise some latitude for independent judgment in the absence of supervision

  • Ability to work in a team environment and treat people with respect

  • Ability to learn and practice new techniques and job skills

  • Ability to perform manual labor and to work in adverse weather conditions

Licenses and Certifications

Equipment Operator I

  • Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker Endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

Equipment Operator II

  • Work Zone Flagger certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire

The incumbent performs manual labor typically in an outside environment; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more several times daily.
