The Service Architecture Lead is responsible for defining and governing service architecture for software-enabled products to ensure they are deployable, maintainable, recoverable, diagnosable, and service-ready across the full product lifecycle. This role translates system-level service strategy into standards, requirements, reusable procedures, and service offerings that can be executed by engineering teams, service teams, and implementation resources across new product development and on-market products.

This position reports to the Sr. Manager, GSRE Upstream & Automation and is part of Global Service engineering department located in Portsmouth, UK or Bangalore, India and will be an on-site role.

What you will do:

  • Define and maintain service architecture standards, design patterns, and guardrails across software-enabled products. Drive standardization of deployment architectures, reference designs, and reusable assets (templates, checklists, tooling)
  • Lead Service Design Reviews (SDRs) across NPD and lifecycle programs to ensure deployability, recoverability, diagnostics, and upgradeability
  • Own core design domains including:
    • Field Installation & upgrade strategy
    • Backup, restore & data integrity
    • Crash recovery & resilience
    • Diagnostics, logging, and observability
    • IT/OT integration (networking, domain, security)
  • Translate field and service requirements into technical architecture requirements early in product development
  • Lead or direct work of cross-functional contributors without formal authority, including engineers and program stakeholders
  • Provide technical direction and coaching to peers, contractors, and cross-functional NPD teams to ensure deliverables are standardized, reusable, scalable, and aligned to Cytiva service expectations.

Who you are:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Automation, or a related technical discipline preferred; Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience will be considered.
  • 10+ years of experience designing, deploying, supporting, or architecting complex software-enabled systems, automation platforms, industrial control systems, IT/OT environments, or enterprise software solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply systems engineering thinking to connect software, infrastructure, networking, data, cybersecurity, service, and lifecycle requirements into practical architecture solutions.
  • Experience developing architecture standards, serviceability frameworks, deployment models, or lifecycle strategies that enable repeatable execution by engineering teams, service organizations, and external partners.
  • Proven ability to lead through influence by translating technical vision into clear requirements, reusable standards, procedures, and work packages that others can execute.
  • Broad technical knowledge across multiple service domains, including software deployment and upgrades, backup and recovery, IT/OT integration, industrial networking, historian platforms, diagnostics, observability, automation validation, or system resilience.

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:

  • Ability to travel – up to 20% domestic and international
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to lift, move or carry equipment up to 25lb.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Experience with industrial automation platforms and ecosystems, including Rockwell, Siemens, AVEVA, OPC UA, historians, or related IT/OT integration technologies.
  • Experience developing or governing service readiness, lifecycle support, deployment, upgrade, backup/restore, or diagnostics standards for complex software-enabled products.
  • Experience working in regulated or validated environments, including exposure to SAT, IQ/OQ, GMP, or automation validation practices.
