This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this department. GENERAL DUTIES

  • Performs microscopic screening and evaluation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Microscopically evaluates specimen adequacy of fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens. Responsible for referring appropriate cases for hierarchical review.
  • Assists supervisor/manager with coordinating laboratory’s workflow, including screening, fine needle aspiration service, and specimen processing sections.
  • Participates in quality control and instrumentation maintenance. Assists with validations as needed.
  • Adheres to the Quality Assurance Program to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Documents slide screening/workload levels for both on-site/off-site locations as required by CLIA guidelines.
  • Supports Medical Section Director with collection of data as required by CAP/CLIA.
  • Adheres to all safety, infection control and HIPAA policies.
  • Assists Medical Section Director with training residents during Cytology rotations.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance/resulting. Refers to supervisor/manager to document and implement corrective actions.
  • Assists with troubleshooting within the laboratory, interacting with laboratory staff and providers, as necessary.
  • Monitors inventory of supplies and reagents for proper asset management.
  • Assists with IT troubleshooting, including Epic upgrades and validations.
  • Complies with CAP and CLIA laboratory standards.

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years in a Cytology Laboratory.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Louisiana CYT license issued by LSBME
  • Cytotechnologist certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, CT (ASCP)
