Position: Housekeeper/Kitchen Assistant

Salary : From £27,976 FTE (dependent on qualification/s and experience)

Hours: Mon-Fri / 32.5hrs/ 0930-1630

Location: Edinburgh

Would you like to have Holyrood Park as a space to have a walk at lunchtime? We would like to invite you to join our team at Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis situated centrally in the heart of Edinburgh. We are looking for Kitchen assistant/housekeeper. This is a varied role, which would suit someone who is flexible forward thinking and loves each day to be different.

The nursery is a 65-place setting located in a single-storey building in the former Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital, backing onto Holyrood Park in central Edinburgh.

The nursery is a short 10-minute walk from Waverley Station, with local bus routes also nearby. There is also parking on site.

Purpose of the role:

Provide support to the Chef in the preparation of meals and snacks, including basic food preparation, dishwashing, and maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic kitchen environment

In addition, light housekeeping duties which creates a clean and orderly environment for our families and staff that will become a critical factor in maintaining and strengthening our reputation. This role requires working in collaboration with others and taking responsibility for working in line with regulatory requirements and BH policies and procedures.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Chef in the day-to-day running of the kitchen, including washing dishes, cleaning equipment, and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

  • Ensure the kitchen environment is kept clean, safe, and well organised at all times while supporting the smooth operation of meal service.

  • Keep the Nursery clean and safe environment for the children, staff and families

  • Encourage and model behaviour which is appropriate in a child environment always being professional, adhering to our Heart Principles  

  • To maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene of the children’s bathroom and nappy change areas throughout the day 

  • To carry out daily laundry duties as required

  • To respond appropriately to issues requiring confidentiality: for example, being aware of personal information regarding children.

  • Support, promote and implement policies and procedures.

  • Work in co-operation and partnership with the Nursery team, providing high standards of cleaning to ensure the smooth running of the nursery. 

  • Be prepared to help where needed, including undertaking of certain domestic tasks within the nursery e.g. supporting over mealtimes and cleaning of equipment. 

  • Ensuring products and materials are appropriate for a nursery environment and stored and used in line with COSHH guidelines.  

  • To take reasonable care of yourself and others and to comply with company Health and Safety guidelines whilst understanding the importance of keeping everyone safe and the part you play. 

  • Demonstrate a proactive approach using your initiative and showing resilience to take responsibility for getting things done.

What we’re looking for

  • Previous experience of cleaning within a domestic or commercial property, preferably within a nursery or care home setting

  • Food Safety CIEH L2 or above (or equivalent) – this must be passed on day 1 in post

  • Sound knowledge of COSHH and Health and Safety requirements

  • Great communication skills, with colleagues, children, and parents
