CPS Investigations & Assessments Senior Specialist (Evening)

Loudoun County Department of Family Services seeks a dedicated and experienced professional for its CPS Investigations & Assessments Evening Senior Specialist position. The successful candidate will join the Child Protective Services program within the Department of Family Services which envisions better health, safety, and well-being for all. This is a mission-critical position requiring strong investigative judgment, supervisory readiness, and the ability to coach others in a fast-paced environment. This position plays a vital role in protecting children and supporting families during non-traditional business hours, when urgent needs often arise and immediate intervention is essential. The selected candidate must be comfortable working independently, making timely safety decisions, and responding effectively in dynamic, high-pressure situations.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Respond to emergency child welfare situations and crisis calls after regular business hours.
• Investigate serious allegations of abuse or neglect, including sexual abuse, human trafficking, severe neglect, and out-of-family investigations.
• Conduct comprehensive family assessments to evaluate child safety, risk, and service needs.
• Interview children, parents, guardians, and collateral contacts.
• Develop and implement safety plans and service recommendations.
• Apply trauma-informed, strengths-based practices in all casework activities.
• Document case activity accurately and timely in state and local case management systems.
• Collaborate with law enforcement, hospitals, schools, courts, and community providers.
• Provide courteous and professional customer service to staff, citizens, vendors, and partners.
• Lead, mentor, and provide work guidance to staff as assigned.
• Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.
  
  

Typical Working hours: 1pm-9:30pm 

• Includes scheduled coverage during overnight hours, weekends, and designated holidays
• Participation in rotating on-call shifts required to receive and validate referrals from 5:00 PM – 8:30 AM and respond to emergency family situations as needed
  
  

This position is eligible for a $3,000 hiring bonus in accordance with the County’s Hiring and Retention Bonus Program.

Hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
Bachelor’s degree required AND three (3) years of directly related experience in a human services area. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of direct CPS Investigations and Family Assessments experience strongly preferred.
• Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Public Administration, or related field.
• Bilingual skills in Spanish and English.
• Knowledge of child welfare systems, trauma-informed practice, motivational interviewing, and strengths-based service delivery.
• Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policy governing child protective services.
• Experience working evenings, on-call rotations, or emergency response functions.

Pass pre-employment background checks to include criminal, fingerprinting, credit, CPS/APS, and DMV checks. Valid driver’s license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification). Hold or obtain certifications such as CPR if required for assigned position. Obtain specific training such as CPS/Foster Care/APS state training as required or desired for assigned area.

Successful candidates must be available for duty beyond the normal workday, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays, as required to perform the functions of the position. This position is considered essential personnel and will require reporting to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency (e.g., weather, transportation, disaster).
