Job Description:

GENERAL PURPOSE

Serves as lead patroller assisting with overseeing ski patrol operations at Howelsen Hill. Responsible for providing emergency medical services, search and rescue, lift evacuation, identifying and marking hazardous ski conditions, opening and closing terrain features, and ensuring accurate and timely documentation of all incidents.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Ski Safety Coordinator and Howelsen Ski and Rodeo Complex Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Assists with supervising up to 15 full-time, part-time, and volunteer ski patrollers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times.

  • Assists with training, scheduling, and supervising Ski Patrol and EMS staff, including overseeing required certifications, recertifications, refreshers, and associated trainings.

  • Assists with pre-season setup, in-season maintenance, and post-season tear-down of mountain, trail, and building areas used by Ski Patrol and EMS.

  • Efficiently and effectively handles on-mountain emergencies, provides medical care, performs daily trail checks, identifies and marks potential hazards, and models snow sport safety.

  • Serves as a liaison between Howelsen Hill, the National Ski Patrol, local EMS agencies, and hospitals to ensure proper patient care and transfer; acts as Patrol Director in their absence.

  • Assists with scheduling, leading, and documenting chairlift evacuation trainings and maintains all evacuation-related ropes and gear.

  • Oversees terrain features at the ski area, including daily opening/closing of the terrain park and individual features, and maintains terrain park record keeping.

  • Coordinates with Risk Management and insurance representatives to ensure City policies, safety procedures, and standards are met.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

  • Serves as a member of various employee committees, including the safety committee.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

WORK TYPE AND SCHEDULE

Seasonal employment (typically November through March) with daytime, evening, and weekend shift availability.

PERKS

  • Seasonal Employees who remain until the end of the ski season are eligible for either: 1. $1.50/hour end of season bonus based on total hours worked OR 2. Employees who regularly work more than 20 hours weekly may select a Steamboat Resort Merchant Pass paid for by the City of Steamboat Springs in lieu of option one (1)
  • All Employees of Howelsen Hill will be eligible to participate in the Real Deal, allowing them to ski at most ski areas in CO.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;

  • Current Certificate in Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) and CPR, or equivalent (EMT);

  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience related to municipal operations or public safety; or

  • Any equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of: Public risk management and loss control principles; safety standards relating to public ski area facilities and equipment; medical emergency response protocols.

  • Ability to: Lead and instruct patrollers; make quick, sound decisions during medical or mountain emergencies; ski or snowboard proficiently in all terrain and weather conditions; maintain clear and accurate incident records.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Current OEC / EMT certification and CPR credentials.

  • Valid Colorado Driver's License or ability to obtain one upon hire.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Ski/snowboard equipment, rescue toboggans, medical and trauma kits, oxygen tanks, lift evacuation gear, radios, splints, personal protective equipment, and winter outerwear.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequently required to ski or snowboard on steep, varied, and hazardous terrain in extreme weather. Regularly requires lifting, hauling, and maneuvering heavy loads (including transporting patients in toboggans weighing up to 100+ pounds with assistance), standing, bending, and reaching. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, night, and peripheral vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily outdoors on the ski mountain in extreme cold, snow, ice, wind, and variable light conditions. High physical exposure to steep terrain, high speeds, and emergency situations.

SELECTION GUIDELINES

Formal application, rating of education and experience, on-snow skiing/riding evaluation, oral interview, reference check, and verification of active certifications.

Pay Range:

$27.90 - $33.91
