CoMotion has an exciting opportunity for a Temporary Patent Portfolio Assistant
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Director, Patents at CoMotion, the Temporary Patent Portfolio Assistant evaluates inventions and assists in the patenting process, including filing preparation, based on invention disclosures submitted by UW researchers, faculty, and staff (inventors) as a result of the University's research activities.
Key Responsibilities
Patent Application Prosecution (90%) — Under the supervision of a Patent Portfolio Manager:
- Conduct patent landscape searches and provide appropriate review
- Participate in disclosure calls with inventors to identify innovation and patent claim scope
- Contribute to drafting provisional patent applications
- Prepare information disclosure statement lists of references needed for patent applications
- Draft patent assignment documents
- Review and provide analysis of office actions not under a current license agreement to CoMotion Innovation Managers
- Collaborate with CoMotion Innovation Managers to provide analysis of office actions to inventors and manage responses
- Collaborate with CoMotion colleagues on all incoming correspondence and provide responses
- Perform additional tasks as needed
Process Improvement (10%)
- In collaboration with the Associate Director, Patents, and other CoMotion staff, provide expertise in evaluating present practices, developing new initiatives, and identifying procedural efficiencies
- Provide guidance on projects that do not warrant further allocation of University resources
- Assist the Associate Director, Patents in reviewing and forming policies and procedures, and in developing strategies for improving the management of intellectual property
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree
Three years of experience in patent or law-related work, or equivalent education/experience
