THIS IS AN INTERNAL ONLY POSITION - OUTSIDE CANDIDATES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under general supervision, regularly operates and performs skilled motorized light to heavy equipment work in support of street maintenance/repair, alley maintenance/repair, storm water collection/drainage, and other service operations throughout the City. Inspects and ensures equipment is in proper working order. May supervise a workforce normally performing tasks associated with heavy or complex equipment operation.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:
- Operates light to heavy motorized equipment owned or leased such as trucks, backhoes front-end loaders, graders, and snow removal equipment.
- Follows proper safety to ensure the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by watching for overhead utility lines, and underground utilities, and controlling traffic in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Performs a variety of heavy manual labor, depending on areas of assignment, such as using a rake to spread asphalt or gravel, cutting out with a shovel or jackhammer, installing new pipe, cutting and clearing vegetation and debris, loading and unloading materials, supplies or equipment, landscaping, tree trimming, clearing debris, laying block or brick and various repair or construction projects.
- Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed.
- Trains co-workers in the operation of a wide range of construction equipment and direct in the absence of supervision
- Performs other duties as assigned by general supervision.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience operating light to heavy equipment; and/or equivalent combination of training and experience which evidences an advanced knowledge of light to heavy equipment operation; demonstrable ability to supervise, perform moderate to heavy physical labor, and follow written and/or oral instructions; must possess a valid Kentucky Class A Commercial Driver’s license within six (6) months of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to perform heavy repetitive manual labor in various temperatures and climates for extended periods of time. Ability to operate internal radio system. Ability to safely operate all motor vehicles and equipment mentioned above. Ability to follow generalized oral and written instructions and maintain effective working relationships with management personnel, fellow employees, and the general public. Maintain the physical requirements to successfully pass the Essential Job Function Test as required for this position at all times
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of construction techniques, ability to read blueprints and grades; carry out written and oral instructions; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; demonstrate the ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor. Must possess demonstrable skill in the operation of light to heavy equipment, trucks, and hand-held power tools.
