Recruitment Range: $81,620 - $114,476

*This position is managerial exempt under N.C.G.S. 126–5 (b) (2) and reports directly to the Senior Deputy Attorney General of the Criminal Bureau.

This position is the Director of the North Carolina Justice Academy, which has campuses in Salemburg, NC (Eastern Campus) and Edneyville, NC (Western Campus).

This position will be responsible for managing and providing strategic oversight as the Program Administrator for the North Carolina Criminal Justice and Education Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission. In this capacity, the Director is responsible for the development, planning, implementation, administration and enforcement of existing and new programs of the Commissions, the management and oversight of grants, Human Resource administration, the oversight of all receipts dedicated for the purpose of carrying out the programs of the NC Justice Academy, and completion of special projects assigned by the Attorney General, Chief of Staff, or Commissions.

This position responds to changes in training techniques and the needs of the customer and ensures that student and staff needs are met. Sets clear goals and objectives and ensures alignment of the organizational and administrative systems to maintain the vision and mission of the Academy. This position will develop policies, practices and procedures to efficiently and effectively achieve both training and operational goals. Work also includes securing and managing resources to complete the mission.

This position directly supervises two Deputy Directors, an Accreditation Manager, and an Administrative Assistant.

Travel, including some occasional overnight stays, is required.

The North Carolina Justice Academy (with campuses in Edneyville, NC and Salemburg, NC) provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for law enforcement officers on topics including: anti-terrorism, community-oriented policing, criminal investigation, traffic crash investigation, firearms, self-defense, and management and supervision. Additionally, the Academy provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for Detention Officers and Telecommunicators on behalf of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Commission (Commission) (G. S. 19C-9C).

    Prior supervisory experience

  • Experience in law enforcement training

  • Public speaking experience.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in criminology, criminal justice, public or police administration or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressively responsible experience in the field, including a minimum of four years in an administrative capacity; or Doctoral degree in the fields mentioned above from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressively responsible experience in the field, including three years in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
