Job Description

The Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and professional environment throughout client facilities and remote camp operations. This position performs a variety of custodial, housekeeping, and light maintenance duties to support daily operations while ensuring compliance with NMS, client, and regulatory standards. The Janitor is expected to deliver exceptional customer service, maintain a high level of attention to detail, and contribute to a safe and productive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of assigned areas, including offices, hallways, stairwells, restrooms, dormitories, common areas, recreation rooms, laundry facilities, kitchens, break rooms, food service areas, workspaces, and other client-designated locations.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, scrub, strip, wax, buff, burnish, extract, and maintain all floor surfaces using appropriate equipment and approved cleaning methods.
  • Dust, disinfect, and clean high-touch surfaces, furniture, fixtures, walls, ceilings, vents, lighting, windows, window coverings, mattresses, and other assigned surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, replenish paper products, soap, and hygiene supplies, and ensure facilities remain fully stocked throughout each shift.
  • Properly collect, transport, compact (when applicable), and dispose of trash and recyclable materials in accordance with company and client procedures.
  • Safely operate and maintain custodial equipment, tools, and chemicals while following Safety Data Sheets (SDS), manufacturer recommendations, and company safety policies.
  • Inspect assigned work areas and report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, or facility deficiencies to supervision in a timely manner.
  • Perform light facility maintenance as assigned, including replacing light bulbs, removing snow and ice from entrances and walkways, and supporting other minor maintenance activities within the scope of the position.
  • Maintain housekeeping carts, storage rooms, janitorial closets, and supply inventories in a clean, organized, and operational condition.
  • Operate company vehicles when required to service multiple work locations while complying with all company driving policies.
  • Complete scheduled deep-cleaning projects, special cleaning assignments, and emergency response cleaning as directed.
  • Maintain accurate communication with supervisors regarding completed work, supply needs, maintenance issues, and operational concerns.
  • Provide professional, courteous, and responsive customer service to clients, guests, and fellow employees while maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Comply with all NMS policies and procedures, client requirements, environmental standards, and federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency procedures and actively participate in safety meetings, required training, and emergency response activities.
  • Wear required uniforms and personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a professional appearance at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support operational requirements.

Qualifications

 

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous janitorial, housekeeping, commercial cleaning, or custodial experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of commercial cleaning equipment, floor care techniques, cleaning chemicals, and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to safely operate custodial equipment, including vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, extractors, and related equipment.
  • Must successfully complete all pre-employment requirements, including but not limited to a hair follicle drug screening, physical assessment, and criminal background check.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English as required by the contract.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively as a member of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work and maintain quality standards in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must maintain compliance with all NMS safety policies, client requirements, and applicable regulatory standards.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors, occasional exposure to arctic outdoor weather conditions.

Noise level: Moderate

Description of environment: This is a public / office setting

Physical requirements: Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 20 lbs. Frequently to constantly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Fit For Duty Test:

  • Lift: Lift 20 lbs. from floor to knuckle x 2,
  • Lift: Lift 20 lbs. from floor to waist x 2,
  • Carry: Carry 20 lbs. with two hands for a minimum distance of 20 feet, self-paced but continuous,
  • Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 3 for each knee, self-paced but continuous,
  • Stand from Supine Position Test: From a supine, recumbent position, while wearing arctic gear, test recipient must be able to stand without assistance x 3, self-paced (this task must be accomplished safely without significant loss of balance or falling and without assistance). Allow one re-test when there is a loss of balance considered unsafe or a fall.
  • Stoop & Twist: Perform alternate cross over toe touches x 5 each side, self-paced but continuous,
  • Walk: Walk on a treadmill at 3 MPH for 10 minutes with good balance
  • Stairs: Climb up and down 10 steps x 2 for a total of 20 steps, self-paced.
