POSITION TITLE: Behavioral Health Certified Medical Assistant

LOCATION: HOPE Clinic - Beltway

REPORTS TO: Clinical Services Manager or assigned Supervisor

EDUCATION: High School Diploma; Certified Medical Assistant

WORK EXPERIENCE: 1 year or more of healthcare experience preferred

SALARY RANGE: $16.50 - $19.50/hour, based on experience

FLSA STATUS: Hourly – Non-exempt

POSITION TYPE: Full-Time

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a program of training for Medical Assistants is required; CMA or RMA is required or must obtain within 3-month probationary period

LANGUAGE: Bilingual in English and Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or other languages is required

JOB SUMMARY:

The Behavioral Health Certified Medical Assistant (BH CMA) provides coordinated care to a variety of patients enrolled in Psychiatric and Counseling services with HOPE Clinic. The BH CMA functions as part of the interdisciplinary care team and provides clinical and administrative support in a culturally and emotionally competent manner. 


MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greet and attend to patients in a therapeutic and professional manner;
  • Register, make appointments, check patients in and out, and process payments all within the parameter of excellent customer service;
  • Perform intake triage, vitals, and assist patients with mental health screenings;
  • Document vitals, screenings, patient history, and personal information as needed;
  • Conduct urine dug screenings, blood draws, and give injections based on provider’s orders;
  • Maintain organization and patient confidentiality;
  • Provide support to providers and coordinates psychotropic medication refill requests including the prior authorization of psychotropic medications;
  • Provide administrative assistance by implementing administrative systems, following outlined procedures, and monitoring administrative projects when assigned;
  • Manage provider schedules to ensure department productivity;
  • Conduct daily reviews and process the referrals queue to behavioral health services for both internal and self-referrals;
  • Close referrals and fill structured data;
  • Responsible for PMP reports from Psychiatric patients;
  • Print PMP reports for all patients before their visit;
  • May advocate and coordinate on behalf of patients with schools;
  • Coordinate and arrange translation services for patient care;
  • Coordinate logistic support for department, including supply restock and equipment maintenance;
  • Abide and sustain workflow expectations established by supervisor;
  • Interview patients to determine their needs and refer them to appropriate community agencies and services (i.e. housing, legal aid, emergency shelter, domestic violence, employment, adult education, food/clothing, etc) if needed;
  • Attend on-site/off-site community engagement activities and on-site/off-site clinic events as needed;
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support HOPE Clinic’s Mission, Vision and Values.

Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of one year in health education, patient navigation, mental health, and/or health clinic patient assistance field preferred;
  • Completion of a CMA training program is required;
  • CMA, CCMA, or RMA is required or willingness to obtain certification within 3-month probationary period;
  • Knowledgeable of and maintains HIPAA standards of privacy and confidentiality;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and be able to utilize the Internet;
  • Able to use basic office equipment (e.g., computer, copier);
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Detail oriented and team player;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks, complexity, and diversity of patients;
  • Insurance and medical experience preferred;
  • Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus, task-oriented; 
  • Ability to work with culturally-diverse families and communities with the ability to be culturally sensitive, appropriate and non-judgmental;
  • Previous behavioral health care or medical assistant experience preferred;  
  • Work well under pressure and maintain a consistently pleasant and professional demeanor when communicating with the public and staff;
  • Be able to maintain a calm and professional attitude even in the face of crisis and dramatic presentation;
  • Able to work in different work settings and environments;  
  • Adhere to clinic policies, procedures, and the professional code of ethics;
  • Basic casework skills (referrals, advocacy) preferred.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or GED is required; Associates Degree preferred. Completion of a program of training for Medical Assistants is required. Experience as a Medical Assistant preferred. Certification or previous work experience with individuals in crisis is preferred.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel to satellite sites and/or off-site locations for support/assignments, events or training as needed;
  • Proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required.


OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Bilingual (Vietnamese, Chinese, Burmese, Arabic and/or Spanish with English) is required;
  • Above average skills in language ability as well as public speaking and writing;
  • Willingness to work in different department and/or travel to satellite sites to provide coverage;
  • Must have good transportation and a valid Texas Driver’s license.
