Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration offers an excellent opportunity for a Principal Engineer Systems – Network Sys Engr III (26-388) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. Based in Colorado Springs, CO, this role is essential to supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at the strategic, regional, and operational levels.
This position does not provide relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is the integrating element of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that enables the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to plan ballistic missile defense operations systematically, collectively see the battle develop, and dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapons systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.
C2BMC supports layered missile defense capabilities that enable an optimized response to threats across all ranges and phases of flight. It is the force multiplier that globally and regionally networks, integrates, and synchronizes autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is an integral part of all system ground and flight tests that verify and exercise the capabilities of current and future missile defense systems.
We are seeking a Networks Systems Engineer to act as the systems engineering subject matter expert (SME) for the Networks ART, leading network-focused systems engineering activities and ensuring alignment with C2BMC Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test (SEIT) processes and practices.
Essential Functions:
In this role, you will:
- Serve as the Networks Systems Engineering SME for the NES ART, developing and implementing the Networks Systems Engineering Plan and advising on all systems engineering–related issues
- Act as the liaison between the Networks ART and the SEIT Resource Managed Area (RMA), ensuring systems engineering processes and procedures are aligned, standardized, and consistently applied
- Lead all Networks requirements activities, including:
- Identification and management of the Networks requirements baseline
- Development and maintenance of the Requirements Traceability Verification Matrix (RTVM)
- System and subsystem requirements allocation to ensure complete traceability from development through deployment
- Management of the Networks requirements sell-off plan
- Act as the systems engineering interface between the NES ART and the C2BMC SEIT team to ensure consistency of systems engineering principles and practices across the program
- Support systems engineering and architecture meetings internal to the National Team as well as with the government customer
- Support the development and review of systems engineering artifacts, including specifications, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Use Cases, System Architecture Descriptions, Trade Studies, and related documentation
- Author and perform formal and informal engineering reviews as required to ensure technical rigor and quality
- Develop interface documentation, system diagrams, system modeling artifacts, and architectural documentation to support Networks capabilities
- Implement standards and patterns across the ART to support quality, consistency, and reuse of systems engineering deliverables
- Establish and maintain the Networks Systems Engineering model, including model-based representations of architecture, interfaces, and behavior
- Develop high-level design material to be incorporated into the baselined Missile Defense System Communication Network Implementation Specification (MCNIS)
- Support proposal efforts by developing technical approaches, leading the generation of engineering estimates, and contributing to basis-of-estimate documentation
- Provide mentoring and guidance to team members to promote standardization and maturity of systems engineering processes and procedures across the Networks ART
- Adhere to DOORS processes and procedures; review the content and details of technical products; and act as a technical interface to Missile Defense Agency (MDA) working-level counterparts as required
- Interface with internal team members, C2BMC management, and government customers to ensure high-quality products are generated on time and within available resources
- Be willing and able to support real-world events, including nights and weekends, as mission needs require
Basic Qualifications:

- A Bachelor’s Degree in STEM Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master’s degree (preferred) in a STEM-related field with 3 years of relevant work experience; or a PhD in a related discipline with 1 year of relevant work experience
- Applicants must have a current, active Government-Issued 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (such as Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA, etc.) at the time of application, which is required to start. The candidate is responsible for maintaining their 8140 certifications throughout the entire contract period
- Applicants must have a current, active in-scope Government-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
- In-depth understanding of systems engineering processes and principles, including requirements analysis, allocation, verification, and validation
- Proven track record of successfully applying systems engineering principles to develop product solutions for large, complex systems
- Experience working in an integrated team environment with systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop coordinated solutions
- Experience developing systems engineering artifacts such as:
- Specifications
- Interface Control Documents (ICDs)
- Use Cases
- System Architecture Descriptions
- Trade Studies and Analysis of Alternatives
- Experience supporting or developing large, complex systems, preferably in defense, command and control, or communications domains
- Experience in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and MBSE tools (e.g., SysML-based tools or similar)
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to present technical information clearly to diverse audiences
- Ability to work effectively in a rapid-paced, multi-site team environment and to manage multiple priorities
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with these additional qualifications will be especially competitive:
- Master's Degree in Systems Engineering is highly preferred
- Certification: INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) Certification
- Certification: Object Management Group Certified Systems Modeling Professional - Model Builder Fundamental (OCSMP - MBF)
- Prior C2BMC program experience
- Experience working within an Agile development environment and familiarity with Agile/SAFe practices
- Domain experience with both Space and Missile Defense mission areas
- Experience with systems analysis, model-based systems engineering, and architecture development for large-scale systems
- Knowledge of virtualization, containerization, and cloud computing principles and how they apply to modern command and control systems
- Demonstrated experience working on large multi-site software and systems development efforts, including external interface development
- Demonstrated experience conducting or leading Analysis of Alternatives, Trade Studies, and/or design evaluations
- Experience designing large command and control and/or weapon systems

Primary Level Salary Range: $103,600.00 - $155,400.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
