Critical Facility Technician LeadJob Description Summary
The Critical Facilities Operations Technician – Shift Lead oversees real-time shift operations for mission-critical data center infrastructure. This role leads on-shift technicians, monitors facility systems, coordinates incident response, supports preventive and corrective maintenance, and ensures all work is performed safely and in accordance with established procedures in a 24/7 critical environment.Job Description
- Lead assigned shift operations for critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure, including UPS systems, generators, switchgear, PDUs, CRAC/CRAH units, and BMS/DCIM platforms.
- Continuously monitor facility systems through BMS, EPMS, and DCIM tools; acknowledge, investigate, and respond to alarms, alerts, and abnormal operating conditions.
- Execute and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Methods of Procedure (MOPs), and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), including pre-task review and post-work documentation.
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance to on-shift technicians, assign priorities, verify work quality, and reinforce safe work practices.
- Act as the initial point of response for facility incidents by troubleshooting issues, stabilizing conditions, escalating as needed, and supporting root-cause analysis.
- Coordinate vendor access and on-site work activities, ensuring compliance with site safety, security, and critical environment protocols.
- Perform, support, or supervise preventive and corrective maintenance on assigned electrical, mechanical, and controls systems.
- Maintain accurate shift logs, alarm response records, incident reports, maintenance documentation, and turnover notes.
- Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory programs, including lockout/tagout, electrical safe work practices, arc flash procedures, and OSHA requirements.
- Conduct structured shift turnovers, clearly communicating system status, open work, active risks, alarms, and required follow-up actions.
- Support minor project work, commissioning activities, system testing, and change activities while maintaining operational continuity.
Requirements
- 3–6 years of experience operating and maintaining data center, critical facilities, industrial, or mission-critical infrastructure.
- Prior experience serving as a lead technician, senior technician, shift lead, or technical point of contact preferred.
- Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, including UPS, generators, switchgear, HVAC, controls, and fire/life safety systems.
- Experience using BMS, EPMS, DCIM, or similar monitoring and control platforms to identify, document, and respond to operating conditions.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical one-lines, mechanical drawings, schematics, sequence-of-operations documents, and technical manuals.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot system issues, follow escalation protocols, and make sound decisions in high-availability environments.
- Familiarity with applicable standards and guidance, such as NFPA, NEC, OSHA, and Uptime Institute practices.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to lead shift-based teams and communicate technical information clearly to leadership, vendors, and peers.
- Ability and willingness to work assigned shifts in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as business needs require.
- Relevant certifications preferred, such as CDCTP, CDCP, electrical, HVAC, or equivalent critical facilities credentials.
