Job Description Summary
GE Vernova Power Conversion & Storage (GEV-PC&S) Division provides electrical power conversion systems for Naval, industry, marine, and Oil & Gas applications. Typical scope includes medium and low voltage (MV & LV) power converters, motors, transformers, E-house, switchgear, and control as well as the associated power systems engineering. The Lead Electrical Engineering role is considered a lead role within the business and expected to be an individual with deep technical capability and hands-on experience / skills within power electronics converters with a strong emphasis on development and applications. The successful candidate is expected to take ownership of power converter designs, analyses, build / manufacturing and testing while supporting controls and software development, real time modeling and simulation to meet equipment, system and customer application requirements.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities:
System Specification and Architecture: Review customer requirements for large industry, marine, renewable and naval power converters. Understand, and highlight differences / gaps between those requirements and available power converter capabilities.
Prepare detailed electrical and electronics specifications for large industry, marine, renewable, and naval power systems that capture customer requirements. Provide technical leadership in trade studies and architecture decisions that impact circuit component / part selection, board layout, and material selection.
Power Electronics Design: Spearhead the design and development of high-power converters including selecting power semiconductor technologies (SiC, GaN, IGBT, Thyristor/SCR etc.), designing magnetics (transformers/inductors), and auxiliary circuitry. Design, select, specify, and validate critical power components (semiconductor devices, capacitors, gate drive circuits, analog circuits, etc.). Lead development of advanced power converter and power system projects from concept to the delivery of a fully validated solution that meets specified requirements. Ensure that all designs and practices implement and foster a culture of safety, quality, delivery, and cost (SQDC). Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with good engineering policies, processes, and procedures. Maintain ownership of all engineering aspects associated with projects including drawings, bill of materials, specifications, test and commissioning procedures.
System Modeling & Simulation: Conduct power electronics circuit and electrical system modeling and simulations using MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSIM, or LTspice to validate converter topologies and control algorithms before prototyping. Create models of the power electronics for performing power system and power quality studies.
Power Systems Integration: Simulate and analyze the interaction between power electronics and the electrical grid (or microgrid), including grid-tied and islanded stability, power quality, harmonic distortion, and EMI/EMC filter design.
Hardware Validation & Debugging: Perform hands-on lab work to Develop component and system mock-ups and prototypes. Develop and perform validation test plans. Validate prototypes, evaluate power converter performance, troubleshoot hardware faults / failures, and characterize electrical and functional performances.
Project Leadership: Serve as a subject matter expert (SME), leading design reviews, defining requirements for converter layout, design, digital communication. Provide technical guidance to PCB layout engineers, controls engineers, and junior mechanical and electrical engineers. Serve as the customer facing technical lead or principal investigator on technology projects including but not limited to power conversion, power systems analysis, power systems controls, and energy storage system integration. Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project. Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews. Manage design reviews for power converters. Partner closely with project managers to keep timelines up to date, communicate challenges clearly to leadership, and ensure customer needs are met.
Compliance & Reliability: Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards (UL, IEC, IEEE, NEC, MIL) and perform DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and reliability assessments. Work with external consultants and third parties to achieve certification of product designs (UL, CSA, CE, MIL, etc.).
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, sourcing, and application engineering teams to ensure manufacturability and meet cost/performance targets. Work with a multi-disciplinary engineering development team that includes application engineering, controls engineering, mechanical design, converter and control hardware design, and product test / validation. Interface with relevant teams to engage and ensure suppliers products and/or services are meeting specifications. Collaborate with global GEV-PCS organizations to understand power converter technologies produced at those factories that can be used to satisfy customers in North America.
Customer Focus: Ensure the needs of the customer and partners are top priority including other GEV businesses, research center, and subcontractors to ensure timely delivery and high-quality engineering solutions.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. or Masters degree in power electronics systems engineering or similar from an accredited university or MS in engineering from an accredited university with an emphasis in Power Electronics and 6+ Years’ experience in power electronics/power conversion (this includes working efforts during pursuit of PhD).
2+ years' experience and deep understanding of semiconductor technologies, including IGBT, SiC, GaN, thyristor, and transistor-based devices, and their implementation in high-density and large power converter applications. Candidate can have prior professional career experience or exposure to the technology during advanced degree pursuit. This should include a strong understanding of switching waveforms, loss modeling, and PWM control and overall power electronics design.
3+ years experience in electrical power systems including the design and building of test bench systems for rotating machines and other power and propulsion equipment (this includes working efforts during pursuit of PhD).
Eligibility Requirements:
The required work location is Imperial, PA (relocation assistance provided if not already local).
Desired Characteristics:
Demonstrated expertise in power electronics technologies, including AC/DC, DC/DC, and DC/AC converter design, as well as the control of voltage-source and current-source power converters by showing ability of past existing written published works by the candidate.
Prior experiences and knowledge of power electronics and power systems modeling and simulations using Matlab/Simulink, PLECS, and other modeling and simulation tools and software platform. Candidate should be able to demonstrate this by showing modeling results of a prior effort.
Demonstrated expertise in circuit design for low- and medium-voltage converter applications, including the design, debugging, and testing of gate drivers, controllers, busbar designs, and current sensors. Candidate should be able to demonstrate ability of this knowledge through prior class work or published papers.
Demonstrated knowledge of design for manufacturability, with the ability to create practical designs that meet production, cost, quality, and assembly requirements
Strong written skills to enable the generation of technical white papers and proposals
