THE OPPORTUNITY

We are hiring a Director Data Scientist in our GenAI area in Portugal! This is a Remote – Portugal position, meaning you can work from anywhere within the country. Please note that this role is only open to candidates in Portugal. 

Our GenAI team is the innovation hub for AI at Wellhub, leveraging advanced AI technologies to personalize wellbeing experiences, streamline operations, and unlock new product surfaces across the company. As Director, Data Science — Generative AI, you will set the direction and drive the execution of the AI systems that shape how millions of people engage with their wellbeing — leading a multidisciplinary team that includes senior/principal-level scientists, partnering with Product, Engineering, and Design to embed generative AI into our core products, and helping Wellhub harness the full potential of AI at scale.

 

YOUR IMPACT

• Own the multi-quarter vision and roadmap for Generative AI at Wellhub — translating ambiguous business goals into a concrete, prioritized technical strategy;
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Design, and executive leadership to secure buy-in for high-investment AI initiatives, and prove tangible ROI as GenAI moves from a center of innovation to a core driver of business value;
• Recruit, lead, and develop a high-performing team that includes senior and principal-level scientists — fostering a culture of innovation, psychological safety, and continuous learning;
• Set the bar for the design, evaluation, and production deployment of LLM-based and agentic systems — including RAG, tool-use, memory, and multi-agent orchestration;
• Establish rigorous evaluation frameworks (offline and online evals, LLM-as-judge, safety and guardrails) — ensuring the systems shipped to users meet high standards of quality, reliability, and safety;
• Balance the adoption of frontier research with the discipline of building stable, reliable products — ensuring Wellhub maintains a competitive edge without succumbing to technological churn;
• Contribute to Wellhub’s broader data science community, setting standards of craft and lifting technical capability across the company;
• Drive LLMOps maturity — owning the deployment, monitoring, and cost/latency optimization of prompt, retrieval, and agent changes from experiment to production;

WHO YOU ARE

• An accomplished data science leader with 5+ years leading DS/ML teams in fast-paced, production environments — with a proven track record of shipping multiple complex GenAI or large-scale ML products from ideation to production;
• An experienced people manager who has directly led senior and principal-level scientists, with a demonstrated ability to grow and retain elite AI talent;
• A deep hands-on expert in modern generative AI systems — LLM architecture, evaluation, production deployment at scale, and (where warranted) fine-tuning of foundation models;
• Strong in Python and modern ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow), with a solid grasp of MLOps/LLMOps best practices in cloud environments;
• A strategic communicator who translates complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, secures executive buy-in, and influences across functions and geographies;
• Comfortable operating across the full ML spectrum — with working knowledge of classical approaches (contextual bandits, classification/ranking models) and the judgment to know when a simpler, more interpretable method beats a generative one;
• Fluent in English (required); Portuguese is a plus for close collaboration with the Brazil team.
