Description
Discover TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre, and one of the world's leading laboratories for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.
Equity, diversity, and inclusion are integral to excellence and enhance our ability to create knowledge and opportunity for all. Together, we are committed to building an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the voices of our employees, students, partners, and the people and communities we serve.
TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines who hang together socially and professionally during the term, and beyond. Our program offers young minds a chance to gather, learn, make new friends, and have fun doing so during their time at TRIUMF. We hold weekly ProD sessions for students which include different activities such as conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and active listening. Additionally, we hold weekly seminars about the different experiments at TRIUMF, and these talks specifically cater to students. Located on the UBC campus makes it easier for students to make friends, create memories, and explore Vancouver all while working at TRIUMF.
TRIUMF’s student program is more than just a place to work, its learning, memories, friendships, exploration, and development all clubbed into one.
Come join us to see how we are working to unlock the mysteries of the universe and shape the future. Apply now and be part of our extraordinary journey.

Overview:
Neutrino oscillations are the only experimentally verified observation of a process not described by the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Since their discovery in 1998, we have learnt a great deal about the parameters that govern these oscillations, but many questions remain. Perhaps the most exciting of these is whether neutrino oscillations violate charge-parity (CP) symmetry, which could potentially explain why we live in a matter-dominated universe.
Super-Kamiokande (Super-K) has been one of the longest-running and most successful particle physics experiments of its generation. Its measurements of solar, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrinos have revealed much about the nature of these ghostly particles, culminating in the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2015 and the Breakthrough Prize in 2016. Since 2018, Super-K has undergone significant upgrades to load the detector with gadolinium (Gd) for measuring the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). In addition to Super-K, the TRIUMF neutrino group is also involved in the next-generation Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) experiment in Japan, which aims to provide a definitive answer on CP violation in the lepton sector. One of the biggest challenges for both Super-K and Hyper-K is achieving a complete understanding of the photosensors that line the inner walls of these detectors — the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The current understanding of the PMTs needs to be significantly improved to reduce detector systematic uncertainties and reach the full physics potential of the experiments, particularly for the CP-violation measurement.
The photosensor test facility (PTF) at TRIUMF is a unique facility that can perform such a task. The PTF is designed to carry out detailed characterization of PMTs. Its key feature is the ability to fire laser light at a PMT submerged in water, from arbitrary angles and positions. This is achieved using an optical head that is translated and rotated via a motor-controlled gantry system. One of the goals of this position is to assist with data taking using PTF, as well as with the data analysis and modelling of the PMT response.
Duties:
- Operate PTF to take data of Super-K PMTs and newly developed Hyper-K photosensors, and following analysis (ROOT, Python).
- Development and debugging of the modelling of the system with simulation tools (e.g. COMSOL, GEANT4).
- Assist with many elements of operation, such as motor-controllers, magnetic field measurements, and electrical pulse digitizers.
- Assist with maintenance and potential upgrades of PTF components, such as gantry system, optical boxes, Helmholtz coils, PMT mounts and cabling
Skills Learned During This Work Experience:
- Experience in many aspects of a complicated physics problem. This will range from low level work on lab measurement systems and electronics, to the description of the high level capabilities of a next-generation neutrino experiment.
- Operation of PMTs
- Operation of a complicated precision calibration system
- Critical thinking and problem solving
- Analysis of critical detector data and assessment of statistical and systematic uncertainties
- Presentation skills from reports in regular meetings at national and international levels
Qualifications/Skills Preferred:
- Undergraduate students in physics, engineering physics or physics and astronomy
- Prior co-op experience is optional
- Programming Languages: C++, Python
- Familiarity with Linux
- We are looking for a quick learner, who can work independently and in a team
