MEDICAL ASSISTANT, SPECIAL DIAGNOSTIC

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Responsible for rendering professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital. Such nursing care is an integral part of the individualized holistic patient care plan as directed by the Medical staff according to the Policies and Procedures of the hospital and in keeping with the generally accepted principles, policies and procedures of the Nursing Services.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT

1. Understands and carries out the nursing care in line with Vision and Mission Statements, Goals and Objectives that suit the scope of the Nursing Services. 2. Works shift duties or as assigned by Unit Manager according to Unit’s Operational Hours.

3. Informs Unit Manager when change occurs in circumstances which affect standards of care.

4. Receives and handover report of patient, knows the case in detail:

•  Progress of the patient.
•  Ensures all doctors’ orders are carried out before shift change and on taking over case.
•  Any incident or problems encountered.

5. Visits every patient in the unit together with the team members on taking over of duties to:

•  Assess condition of patient, compare with report.
• Re-plan nursing care according to assessment or evaluation
• Determines nursing priorities and plans patient care according to patient’s needs and staff availability
• Provides individualized holistic care to patients using the Nursing Process approach with proper nursing documentation in patients files and that it is contemporaneous.
• Reports all abnormal findings and progress of patients to the relevant doctors / consultants.
• Conducts regular nursing rounds on all patients in the ward / zone to ascertain for other additional needs; talk to patient/family members as an integral part of providing emotional support.
• Follows doctors / consultants ward round and assists them in doing procedures when required.
• Carries out orders of doctors / consultants pertaining to care of patients and delegates to other team members according to their assignments.
• Liaises and discusses with the relevant doctors / consultants with regards to care of patients in the unit / ward. Establishes and develops effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives, to achieve optimal patient’ satisfaction.
• Attends and participates in unit meetings, dialogue sessions and hospital’s activities.
• Participates in the health education of patients and their families in the ward.
• Assists the Unit Manager in the administration of the unit / wards when assigned as shift nurse in charge.
• Acts on behalf of the Unit Manager in setting standards and expectations in the quality of care.

6. Carries out duties and responsibilities of the Unit Manager in her absence as directed.

7. Ensure charges of equipment/consumable items into patient’s charges accordingly and checked for completeness.

8. Responsible for checking and documenting supply of sterile packs from CSSS and weekly checking for integrity of packaging.

9. Maintains and documents adequate supply of unit stock Carries out assignments scheduled by Unit Manager and provide feedback.

HUMAN RESOURCE AND DEVELOPMENT

1.Takes personal responsibility for own professional development and keeps up to date with professional change and growth by maintaining mandatory learning hours.

2. Participates in the teaching program of the unit / ward and orientation of new members of staff to the ward routine.

3. Involves in the supervision of the lower categories of staff:

• Assistant nurses, Midwives, Care Assistant
• Student nurses who are posted to the unit for their clinical experience and assist them to achieve their objectives of that clinical attachment.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

1.Formulate, enforce, revise and evaluate guidelines/policies of PCI regularly and ensure it is accessible to all staff.

2. Monitor compliance with infection control policies, inclusive of activities directly associated with audit

3. Conduct regular environmental inspection.

4. Participate in accepted Infection control requirement for building construction and renovation.

5. Ensure all new equipment conforms to accepted Infection control Standards. 6. Develop and update isolation techniques and procedures in accordance with current standards of practice, rules and regulations.

7. Ensure all policies and procedures of Integrated Management System (IMS), and/or Hospital Accreditation are adhered to and records maintained, if and when these programs are implemented.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

1. Ensure adequate and proper utilization of space and equipment for patient management and staff.

2. Ensure all medical devices shall comply with the manufacturers’ instruction on PCI Ensure no recycling of any disposables medical surgical instruments / equipment.

3. Ensure compliance to regulatory requirements for isolation facilities.

SAFETY AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT ACTIVTIES

SURVEILLANCE

1. Ensure availability of planned and systematic safety and quality improvement activity

2. Conduct planned and systematic surveillance using infection control criteria. 3. Ensure indicator reports are available with tracking and trending.

4. Ensure appropriate action on all emerging and reemerging diseases are taken and reported to relevant authority

5. Assess environmental health according to the standards of Infection Control. 6. Participate in sharp injuries investigation and prevention activities.

7. Collect data on the incidence of selected device use in intensive care unit. 8. Participate in investigations of unusual hospital infection outbreak utilizing the microbiology laboratory, consultation with Infection Control

9. Chairman and when necessary in consultation with Ministry of Health.

10. Report findings of investigations to appropriate authorities in accordance with the Infection Control Policy and Procedures.

AUDIT

1. Plan and organize audit schedule program for the year Carry out audits conforms to criteria set for infection control and best practice.

2. Participate in clinical programs and provide relevant results to area concerned and nursing management team.

 ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE SPECIFIC AREAS

 OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Participate in any new services that are introduced by the organization. 2. Ensure conformance to all policies and procedures of MS ISO 9001, OSHA 18001 and Malaysian Hospital Accreditation Standards.

3. Comply with the Baby Friendly Hospital requirements and adhere to the 10 steps of successful breastfeeding.

4. Participate in 5S activities and comply with the specified requirements.

5. Assist committee to develop and implement services policy and procedures, quality assurance activities such as Patient  Satisfactory Questionnaires, QCC, ISO 9001: 2008, and etc

6. Ensure the policies on patients and family’s rights are addressed at all times. 7. Ensure compliance to Patient safety goals as safety improvement measures recommended by World Alliance for Patient Safety (2008)

8. Perform any other duties assigned by the CEO.

9. To carried out duties as an employee as stipulated in Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Qualification Required:

Minimum

• Certificate/Diploma in Medical Assistant

Preferred

• Post Basic qualification in related field.
• Bachelor of Nursing

Experience Required:

Minimum

• Registered with Lembaga Pembantu Perubatan Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Medical Assistant
• Medical Assistant with 1 year experience
• Able to write and communicate in Bahasa Malaysia and English Language

Preferred

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Caring, honest and responsible worker.
• Willingness to work on scheduled hours, shift, and weekends, public holidays, on-call and anytime when called during emergency.
• Microsoft office literacy

Personal Characteristics:

Has good communication, counseling and interpersonal skills. Able to guide nursing staff, student nurse and non-nursing staff. Has the ability to improve knowledge and skill in teaching and supervision in the clinical areas. Possess the attitude to make the patient care the primary concern, treating every patient compassionately, demonstrating and an aspiration to altruism. Strive to provide high quality nursing care; maintain patient’s dignity, privacy, autonomy and confidentiality. Prepared to work as a team member in the best possible manner.
