Job Summary:
The Chief Nursing Executive (CNE) position is an extraordinary opportunity for a dynamic, innovative, and accomplished nurse executive to lead the comprehensive practice of nursing professional practice, across all environments of clinical care, and to be accountable for the outcomes of the evidence-based nursing practice across the institution. The successful candidate will lead the creation and implementation of a visionary strategic agenda for nursing that links clinical practice, training and education, with innovation and excellence. As such, they will ensure the integration of services and compliance with long-range objectives and strategies, including the provision of excellent quality services and responsible fiscal management.
At this pivotal moment in its history, Wellstar Health System is poised for continued growth and expansion, allowing the organization to reach and treat more patients than ever before. This position will be essential to developing strategies to meet the patient care needs, along the continuum of care, to help ensure successful growth strategies that are essential for the long-term financial and service success.
As the senior nursing executive and a member of the executive team, the CNE will ensure that nursing operations and future strategies for patient care are developed in accordance with the overall goals of Wellstar Health System. The CNE will provide the direction and leadership to ensure that the nursing organizational structures meet both professional, institutional and patient-care goals. Additionally, the CNE will strategically forecast and be accountable for setting up patient care models for the numerous care sites outside of the inpatient arena (care at home, virtual care, ambulatory care, etc.). The CNE will partner with fellow executives to attain Magnet, Baldridge, and other designations across the enterprise.
With the addition of Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center, academic integration will continue to be a priority as it enables an array of students and trainees to serve at Wellstar hospitals throughout the system. The expansion of the academic components of the health system will require the CNE to work in partnership with Medical College of Georgia leadership and other members of the executive leadership team to develop the infrastructure to support an ever-growing academic health system. The hospital and physician leaders and the Wellstar Medical Group are all key partners in planning the operational implications for the expanding academic presence throughout Wellstar Health System.
Core Responsibilities:
This is a role that requires exceptional talent across multiple functional competencies including operations, strategy, fiscal responsibility, innovation, education, quality, and others. The successful candidate for this role must demonstrate flexibility and agility in designing solutions to support innovative, multi-disciplinary models of care that lead to higher levels of nurse engagement, successful nursing care across various clinical settings, patient satisfaction and that fosters fiscally responsible care. The responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:
Represents Nursing and Patient Care Services with other members of the executive leadership team.
Develops a nursing organizational structure that meets the complex and multiple care delivery sites.
Ensures the establishment of consistent standards of nursing practice throughout Wellstar Health System.
Participates with leaders of the governing bodies, management, nursing, medical and clinical staff in the Hospital's decision-making structures and processes.
Participates with leaders of the governing bodies, management, nursing, medical and clinical staff in the ongoing development and review of the Hospital's mission, strategic plan and operations, policies and procedures and allocation of resources.
Participates with leaders from the governing body, management, nursing, medical and clinical staff in planning and implementing quality assessment and improvement programs, quality monitoring and quality improvement activities.
Participates with leaders from management, nursing, medical and clinical staff in developing and maintaining a Risk Management and Patient Safety Program, fostering a fair and open culture for error and near miss reporting and accountability for safety solutions.
Responsible for the establishment of a dynamic daily management process improvement structure and process for the attainment of established metrics for quality and patient experience outcomes.
Champions a Patient Experience agenda inclusive of interdisciplinary approaches to care, establishment of a strong dyad model, shared decision making at the unit level and service level.
Leads nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing for the promotion of the patient experience.
Demonstrates leadership that ascribes to teaching and coaching and aligns with developing Wellstar Health hospitals to obtain the Magnet designation of excellence in nursing practice.
Synthesizes quantitative and qualitative feedback regarding the patient experience, quality metrics, and staff engagement to Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team that leads to the development and implementation of an action plan.
Fosters a professional practice environment through facilitation of collegial interdisciplinary relationships, shared decision making, peer review, innovation and support at the multiple levels of Wellstar Health.
Facilitates organizational change initiatives by using effective strategies such as Lean and Daily Performance Improvement.
Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in practice councils, departmental meetings and initiatives.
Participates in evaluating, selecting, and integrating health care technology and information management systems that support patient care needs and the efficient use of resources.
Participates with system and hospital leaders to coordinate requirements for patient care with available resources.
Participates in establishing new programs to assure adequacy of patient care resources.
Leads the establishment of programs and practices to promote the patient experience and patient centered care.
Develops, in collaboration with administrators and other professional disciplines, hospital- wide patient care standards, policies, and procedures which describe how the care needs of patients are assessed, evaluated, and met at all types of care sites.

Formulates annual goals for nursing and patient care services consistent with the overall annual goals of Wellstar Health.
Participates with leaders from governing body, management, nursing, medical and clinical staff in the development and maintenance of an effective safety management program.
Inspires and fosters a nurturing and inclusive environment celebrating differences in culture, perspectives and thinking among and between colleagues.
Utilizes transparent, fair and just practices in hiring staff, selecting vendors and in other business decisions.
Presents to the Wellstar Board as needed.
Required Minimum Education:
Master’s degree in Nursing is required, doctoral degree (PhD or DNP) is strongly preferred. Candidates in pursuit of doctoral degree are also welcome and will be fully considered.
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
Licensed as a Registered Nurse or eligible for licensure in the State of Georgia.
Nursing Executive, Advanced by American Nurses Association preferred.
Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum fifteen years of nursing leadership experience which includes experience in senior nurse leadership role(s).
Previous experience in a matrixed and complex health system is required.
Magnet experience is required, Baldridge experience is highly desirable.
Active member in applicable professional organization(s).
