Overview
The Pipeline Locator is responsible for pipeline integrity and damage prevention activities by accurately locating and marking underground pipelines and utility assets. This position helps ensure safe excavation practices, protects critical infrastructure, and maintains regulatory compliance. The role requires strong safety awareness, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in field environments.
Responsibilities
- Locate underground pipelines and utilities using EM locating equipment, GPS, maps, and field observations.
- Mark underground assets using paint, flags, stakes, and other approved methods.
- Read, interpret, and respond to One-Call/811 tickets.
- Review utility maps, blueprints, right-of-way documentation, and as-built drawings.
- Monitor excavation, construction, and maintenance activities near pipelines.
- Provide safety oversight to contractors and third parties working around underground assets.
- Ensure proper precautions are followed to prevent pipeline and utility strikes.
- Complete daily reports, safety checklists, locate records, and compliance documentation.
- Maintain accurate records of locate requests and damage-prevention activities.
- Assist with emergency response involving pipeline incidents or excavation emergencies.
- Coordinate with Operations, Integrity, EH&S, and contractor personnel.
- Inspect pipeline rights-of-way and report safety, environmental, or operational concerns.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Basic computer and mobile device skills.
- Ability to read maps, drawings, and technical documents.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Previous utility locating, pipeline, oil & gas, construction, or damage-prevention experience preferred.
- Experience with EM locating equipment and GPS mapping tools preferred.
- Knowledge of underground pipeline and utility systems preferred.
- Familiarity with One-Call/811 requirements and excavation safety practices preferred.
- Must pass all conditional job offer requirements including background, drug screen, hair follicle, MVR, agility, and fit for duty.
