Agency Summary
The purpose and mission of the Marion County Coroner’s agency is to investigate and determine a person’s cause and manner of death, particularly in cases when the individual died under unusual circumstances. The office consoles families, advocates for the deceased, and gives information to police and courts to prosecute suspected criminals. The agency strives to cultivate a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment in order for our workforce to meet the needs of the residents of Indianapolis and Marion County.

- Provides preliminary data and information from death investigations.
- Ensures that the total work produce meets all appropriate scientific, legal and accreditation requirements,
- Maintains a variety of records, databases, and logbooks pertaining to autopsy records, deaths, disposal permits, autopsy quality assurance data and investigative data.
- Reviews and documents decedent personal property.
- Works with the families in scheduling appointments and releasing of property to the legal next of kin.
- Enters and maintains system documentation of all work performed ensuring accuracy and completeness for death investigations.
- Assist or performs procedures for identification of decedent records.
- Writes and creates documents such as reports, memos, presentations, and spreadsheets.
- Provides clerical support in meetings through effective note taking or recording meeting minutes.
- Conducts effective research.

Some work may be performed in a standard office setting; however, other work may be performed in the field with a variety of weather conditions and locations. May be exposed to inclement weather conditions. Will be exposed to dead bodies, some in decompose state, infectious and contagious disease, noxious fumes and hazardous chemicals and materials.
