Description
THE DIVISION
The City of Visalia Parks Maintenance Division is part of the Parks and Recreations Department. The Parks Maintenance Division is comprised of sixteen full-time employees and thirteen hourly park maintenance staff that are responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of 31 parks and 34 restrooms. Many of these facilities operate on a 7 day per week schedule.
THE POSITIONThe position of Park Ranger works under general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor. The Park Ranger patrols city parks, trails and recreation facilities, enforces applicable city ordinances, county codes, and state laws relating to use of parks, trails, and city parks facilities, as well as performing related work as required.
This position is also responsible for evening facility closures, primarily at Riverway Sports Park, including monitoring facilities during closing hours and ensuring that park users and activities comply with established rules and regulations.
The Park Ranger position requires regular evening and weekend work assignments, including scheduled evening facility closures. Work schedules may vary based on park activities, facility usage, special events, seasonal needs, and operational requirements.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented, self-starter who understands the basic principles and practices associated with enforcing park ordinances, rules, and regulations. The incumbent should have knowledge of proper methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the maintenance and operation of grounds and buildings associated with parks and recreational facilities.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to maintain accurate records, prepare clear and concise reports, exercise sound judgment, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. In addition, the Park Ranger will establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and other employees while assisting in the development and presentation of nature-oriented educational programs.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate discipline, discretion, and sound judgment when responding to stressful situations involving visitor and employee safety. The position requires the ability to work evenings and weekends, including evening facility closures primarily at Riverway Sports Park. The successful candidate must be willing and able to work a variable schedule based on park operations, facility use, special events, and community activities.
The ideal candidate will also have experience using office equipment and the ability to operate and learn various computer software programs.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAny combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:
- Two (2) years of experience in parks operations, security operations, law enforcement or related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver's License, by time of appointment.
- Successful completion of a law enforcement procedures (PC 832) course certified by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training required within ninety (90) days of appointment.
- Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of appointment, valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid certifications and maintain certifications according to statutory mandates during course of employment.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
Strength: Heavy Work – Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling over one hundred (100) pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects over fifty (50) pounds.
