Through a competitive application process, qualified Rowan-Cabarrus Community College students enrolled in the Social and Human Services curriculum will be selected for internship opportunities within the Customer Service Department at the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, so students are encouraged to apply early. Space is limited, and we anticipate a competitive selection process.
Cabarrus County Government is pleased to offer an internship opportunity specifically for Rowan-Cabarrus Community College students enrolled in the Social and Human Services curriculum. If you are interested in exploring a career in human services or local government but are unsure how to get started, this internship is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience while learning from experienced County professionals.
This internship provides eligible RCCC students with hands-on experience in the Customer Service Department at the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services. Interns will gain exposure to the services and processes that support individuals and families in the community while developing practical, career-related skills that complement their academic studies.
The purpose of this internship is to provide a meaningful professional learning experience for students who demonstrate strong academic performance and a desire to learn, contribute, and serve the community.
Interns will receive guidance and mentorship from experienced Cabarrus County professionals while gaining knowledge and skills that support their academic, professional, and personal development.

Compensation: $15 per hour worked (internships are not eligible for benefits)
Schedule: Part-time Mon - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. - Hours and days will vary. This internship requires the completion of 160 total hours, averaging approximately 10 hours per week during the 16-week semester.
Duration: Most of Cabarrus County internships are expected to last for a duration of six-months pending availability of funds and continuation of the internship program. Internship Program may end at any time with or without notice.

- Completes special projects as assigned.

Interns will be expected to:
- Provide welcoming, professional, and customer-focused service to all customers and visitors.
- Treat customers with courtesy, patience, empathy, and respect.
- Develop a working knowledge of DSS programs, services, and community resources.
- Assist customers with applications, forms, document submission, and self-service tools.
- Help customers navigate kiosks, virtual stations, scanners, QR codes, ePASS, and other technology.
- Use professional communication and foundational human services skills, including active listening, open-ended questioning, rapport building, and advocacy awareness.
- Demonstrate an understanding of multicultural considerations, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
- Maintain confidentiality, protect sensitive customer information, and adhere to the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) Code of Ethics.
- Recognize the boundaries of the Social and Human Services Assistant internship role and refer eligibility, policy, or other questions outside the role’s scope to the appropriate staff.
- Remain attentive to lobby activity, customer needs, and potential concerns.
- Maintain organized and fully stocked virtual stations, customer areas, and supplies.
- Communicate recurring customer questions, concerns, or barriers to staff to help improve the customer experience.
- Demonstrate professionalism through appropriate workplace appearance, attitude, communication, and conduct.
- Maintain regular attendance and demonstrate punctuality, dependability, initiative, flexibility, and teamwork.
- Seek an appropriate level of direction and guidance and consult with the supervisor when questions or concerns arise.
- Demonstrate an active interest in learning about careers in the human services field.
- Complete assigned duties, projects, and deadlines successfully at a level appropriate for a student in training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices in the area of work or assignment; knowledge of research techniques relevant to the area of work; knowledge of data collection methods and techniques; knowledge of the equipment used in the area of work or assignment; proficiency in basic computer skills; ability to research and organize facts and present them in a simple and clearly written form; ability to prepare written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Be currently enrolled in the Social and Human Services curriculum at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
- Maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be willing and able to complete the entire internship assignment.
- Complete 160 total internship hours, averaging approximately 10 hours per week throughout the 16-week semester.
- Be able to provide acceptable documentation establishing identity and authorization to work in the United States within three business days of employment.

Physical Requirements:
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
