We are seeking a Senior Staff Infrastructure Engineer with deep Oracle and Exadata expertise, a strong engineering mindset, and hands-on experience with infrastructure as code, cloud automation, and AWS. This role will modernize resilient database platforms, establish reusable engineering standards, reduce manual work, and help the broader team scale.

The ideal candidate treats infrastructure as software through automation, version control, testing, peer review, and clear documentation. As a senior technical leader, this person will solve complex challenges, mentor engineers, and apply AI as a responsible productivity accelerator while retaining ownership of technical decisions and production outcomes.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT; Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; and Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Key Responsibilities

Platform Engineering

• Design, build, and operate secure, highly available Oracle database platforms across Exadata and Oracle RDS.
• Engineer resiliency using Oracle RAC, Data Guard, SharePlex, backup and recovery capabilities, and Exadata platform features.
• Lead capacity planning, performance and cost optimization, migrations, upgrades, consolidations, and cloud transitions.
• Ensure platforms meet enterprise expectations for security, availability, recoverability, performance, and service levels.

Automation & Infrastructure as Code

• Design reusable infrastructure automation using Terraform, OpenTofu, Ansible, AWS CloudFormation, Python, and APIs.
• Apply software engineering practices to infrastructure, including modular design, version control, testing, validation, peer review, and continuous integration and delivery.
• Establish practical standards, guardrails, playbooks, and documentation that allow teams to provision and change infrastructure consistently and safely.
• Reduce operational complexity and manual work through automation and standardization.

Technical Leadership & Operational Excellence

• Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for complex production issues while improving observability, alerting, reliability, and operational maturity.
• Partner across application, cloud, security, architecture, and infrastructure teams to deliver enterprise-critical outcomes.
• Lead cross-functional technical workstreams, influence engineering direction, and translate complex challenges into sustainable solutions.
• Mentor engineers and strengthen infrastructure-as-code, automation, cloud, and software engineering capabilities across the team.

AI-Enabled Engineering & Technology

• The successful candidate will use AI as a responsible productivity accelerator while retaining ownership of technical decisions and production outcomes.
• Use AI-assisted tools to accelerate coding, automation, analysis, troubleshooting, testing, refactoring, and documentation.
• Critically evaluate AI-generated output and validate it through domain expertise, system knowledge, and production feedback.
• Apply AI within enterprise security, privacy, governance, compliance, logging, and audit requirements.
• Apply practical knowledge of generative AI, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, model evaluation, and AI observability to infrastructure engineering challenges.
• Explore practical use cases such as log and metric analysis, incident investigation, configuration review, and root-cause analysis.
• Maintain accountability for technical decisions and clearly explain how AI contributed to an engineering outcome.

Deep AI or machine-learning specialization is not required. The priority is an experienced infrastructure engineer who can apply AI thoughtfully to real engineering and operational challenges.

Required Skills & Experience

• Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position. 
• 8+ years of infrastructure engineering, database platform engineering, cloud engineering, or related enterprise technology experience.
• Deep expertise with Oracle Database and Exadata, including Oracle RAC, Data Guard, RMAN, ASM, PL/SQL, performance tuning, backup and recovery, resiliency, and capacity management.
• Hands-on experience designing or operating infrastructure in AWS.
• Strong infrastructure-as-code and automation experience using Terraform, OpenTofu, Ansible, AWS CloudFormation, Python, shell scripting, APIs, and REST-based integrations.
• Experience with Git-based development, testing, reusable modules, and continuous integration and delivery practices.
• Demonstrated ability to establish engineering standards and guardrails, troubleshoot complex enterprise environments, and lead technical initiatives across teams.
• Strong communication and mentoring skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
• Experience using modern development environments such as Visual Studio Code.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced Oracle Exadata administration, patching, capacity management, and performance diagnostics.
• Experience with monitoring, observability, and data-protection platforms such as Rubrik, Foglight, Dynatrace, and Splunk.
• Experience with database change automation and continuous integration and delivery tooling, including Liquibase.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, API-based automation, or other cloud-native technologies.
• AWS certifications or comparable demonstrated cloud expertise.
• Experience in Agile environments and helping teams transition from manual administration to automation and infrastructure as code.

 

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$137,200 - $205,800
