Newburyport Bank is a community bank supported by the strength of our shared services organization, River Run, and banking affiliates, Pentucket Bank and Rollstone Bank and Trust.
The Commercial Lending Team Leader leads the origination of profitable commercial loans, deposits, and other ancillary bank products and services through the development of strong business relationships with high quality existing and prospective business customers. Oversees, coaches, and mentors a team of commercial lenders as well as portfolio managers towards accomplishing goals and business objectives.
Essential Job Functions
- Manages and coaches a team of lenders in alignment with departmental goals; completes performance reviews and effectively manages employee relations issues.
- Balances business development and risk management objectives while ensuring the Lending team generates profitable commercial loans, fee income, and deposit growth in accordance with organizational sales goals; sources and develops new commercial loan business within established risk, pricing, loan/customer type, and goal parameters.
- Establishes and maintains strong relationships with existing and prospective customers and referral sources; conducts business reviews to ensure client satisfaction and participates in bank-sponsored, community, nonprofit, and other activities to maintain the Bank’s favorable community image and leverage centers of influence and referrals.
- Partners with all business lines to identify cross-selling opportunities that optimize overall Bank growth; ensures accurate and timely completion of assigned projects and assists with internal Bank Committee assignments as requested.
- Ensures accuracy and completeness of loan documentation and compliance with Bank policies, procedures, applicable laws, and regulations to minimize risk; proactively manages the assigned customer relationship portfolio with the Commercial Portfolio Manager, including expired lines, annual reviews, documentation exceptions, and past-due financial statements, to meet deadlines and achieve satisfactory or better exam, audit, and loan review results.
- Proactively manages assigned problem loan relationships and develops and implements appropriate action steps to optimize the timing of relationship upgrades or exits, as appropriate.
Requirements
Qualifications, Experience, and Education
- Bachelor’s degree with a business focus preferred; minimum 10 years of progressive commercial lending and commercial banking experience, including demonstrated business development experience and 5 years preferred in a leadership or management role. Commercial and real estate lending experience preferred.
- Formal commercial credit and/or sales training preferred, with strong knowledge of credit structure, credit quality, and applicable Bank policy guidelines; demonstrated ability to assess loan applicant risk, structure credit appropriately, and manage lending risk.
- Strong knowledge of Commercial loan and deposit/treasury products; excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency with office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation applications.
- Professional demeanor and maturity to work effectively with customers, employees, vendors, and members of the Board of Directors; bilingual skills preferred.
