Recycling Collection Technician (part-time, 28 hours/week)
The Recycling Collection Technician is responsible for the collection of recycling materials, secure document management, distributing recycling containers, and other duties assigned by supervisor.
What you’ll do in this position:
- Drive a box truck to collect materials and distribute containers
- Operate all vehicles and equipment in a safe, effective manner to minimize the risk of injury and property damage
- Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections
- Operate and maintain a clean university vehicle
- Interact with campus, MTC, and Church employees, visitors, and contractors in a professional manner
- Arrange for confidential document pick-up and shredding
- Recycling and secure document container distribution
- Follow procedures for collecting, sorting, and handling recyclable materials
- Provide recycling collection at events, such as sporting events, student orientation and moving in and out of housing
- Monitor equipment for maintenance and repair needs
- Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of equipment
- Arrange for maintenance and repair
- Participate in waste audits
- Analyze processes and improve efficiencies in all stages of the recycling process
- Recognize potential hazards in recycling process and provide resolution
What qualifies you for this role:
Required:
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
- 2 years of training or experience in industrial equipment operations, truck driving, or sustainability
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to operate equipment – such as box truck, forklift, shredder, etc.
- UDOT Med Card or ability to obtain one after employment
- Excellent public relations skills
Physical Exam and Lift Test Required
Physical Effort: Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (up to 50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions. Entering and exiting trucks and equipment, reaching, walking, and climbing.
Environment: Frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters.
Hazards: Moderate existing or potential hazards. Working around loud and heavy equipment and driving a truck.
Physical Requirements
- Perform frequent lifting, carrying, handling, pushing, and pulling of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., including use of medium-weight hand tools.
- Regularly enter and exit trucks and heavy equipment and work around loud, moving, and potentially hazardous machinery. Required PPE, including eye and hearing protection, gloves, and appropriate protective footwear, must be worn as applicable.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and in areas that may be cramped, dirty, dusty, muddy, wet, or otherwise unpleasant. Appropriate weather-resistant clothing and PPE are required as applicable.
Preferred:
- 5+ years of training and experience in industrial equipment operations
- High interest in environmental science subjects, as displayed on transcripts or class descriptions
- Expertise in recycling industry standards

Pay Grade: 48
Typical Starting Pay: $20.25 to $26.50 an hour
