This is a permanent, field-based position supporting water and wastewater projects across South Yorkshire and the Midlands. You will take responsibility for commissioning process control systems, instrumentation and associated electrical and mechanical equipment, ensuring systems are safely tested, documented and brought into operation.
This role suits an engineer with strong practical commissioning experience who can lead on-site work, solve technical problems, and communicate confidently with clients, project teams, subcontractors, and software integration specialists.
What you’ll be doing
- Planning, coordinating and delivering commissioning activities across water and wastewater projects.
- Commissioning process control systems, instrumentation, equipment and automation systems.
- Working with level, pressure and flow instrumentation, telemetry systems, Profibus and associated controls.
- Liaising with software integration teams to support the full commissioning of systems.
- Producing commissioning plans, schedules, procedures, reports and supporting documentation.
- Developing commissioning-specific documentation, including test records and handover information.
- Developing single-line diagrams, block cable diagrams and termination or loop diagrams for formal drawing by others.
- Managing assigned maintenance, repair, installation and commissioning work professionally and safely.
- Ensuring work is delivered to agreed programmes, budgets, quality standards and client expectations.
- Identifying technical issues during commissioning and implementing practical solutions.
- Coordinating with clients, project managers, site teams, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Monitoring subcontractor performance and ensuring work is completed to the required standard.
- Supporting tenders, quotations, design reviews, procurement and project planning where required.
- Providing clear progress updates and maintaining accurate project and commissioning records.
- Supporting and developing other engineers through coaching, mentoring and technical guidance.
- Ensuring all activities comply with health and safety, quality and environmental procedures.
What we’re looking for
Essential experience
- Significant commissioning experience within the water or wastewater industry.
- A strong understanding of process instrumentation, including level, pressure and flow measurement.
- Experience commissioning automation, control and telemetry systems.
- Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems used in water infrastructure.
- The ability to read, interpret and contribute to technical drawings and commissioning documentation.
- Experience planning and coordinating commissioning work on operational sites.
- Confidence working directly with clients, site teams and subcontractors.
- Good ability to produce clear technical reports and records.
- A practical, hands-on approach to taking systems from installation through testing, commissioning and handover.
Qualifications
A relevant electrical, controls, instrumentation or engineering qualification is required. Candidates may hold a vocational or academic qualification, although an HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent discipline, would be particularly suitable.
Personal qualities
You will be:
- Safety-conscious and professionally accountable.
- Organised, reliable and comfortable managing competing priorities.
- Proactive and decisive when responding to site or commissioning issues.
- Commercially aware, with an understanding of programme and budget requirements.
- Confident communicating technical information to different audiences.
- Able to work independently while contributing positively to a wider project team.
- Comfortable providing direction, support and leadership to engineers and subcontractors.
- Focused on delivering a high standard of work and a positive client experience.
Package
The role offers:
- Salary of £65,000–£70,000
- Company car or car allowance (circa £6k)
- Enhanced contributory pension, with the employer contribution potentially matching employee contributions up to 10%
- Subsidised BUPA private healthcare
- Additional company benefits
- Long-term career development within a specialist engineering and water-sector environment
