Description

The Communication Studies Department at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Carnegie-classified R2 institution in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education, seeks outstanding applicants for a tenure-line position in Media Studies who value its mission and share its commitment to inclusive excellence and the building of a just society.

Who We Are

The Communication Studies Department at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Carnegie-classified R2 institution in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education, seeks outstanding applicants for a tenure-line position in Media Studies who value its mission and share its commitment to inclusive excellence and the building of a just society.

Communication Studies is one of the largest undergraduate programs at LMU. In keeping with LMU’s mission, our department emphasizes the ethical and effective deployment of communication in pursuit of a more just and humane world. We also strive to help students foster the knowledge and skills necessary to develop more satisfying personal and professional relationships. Our faculty is committed to scholarship and service projects that support our mission and reflect a critical orientation toward the discipline. We are committed to developing a culturally diverse environment for our faculty and students.

LMU is federally recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI) and is recognized by the State of California as a Black-Serving Institution (BSI). These designations reflect the university's continuing commitment to supporting student success, belonging, and thriving within a diverse academic community. As a Catholic, Jesuit, and Marymount University, LMU values faculty who engage students as whole persons and pursue scholarly work that promotes justice, equity, and the Common Good.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to LMU's teacher-scholar model. A teacher-scholar conducts research and creative work that contributes to the larger body of knowledge while setting an example for the importance of lifelong learning. A teacher-scholar at LMU is dedicated to (1) teaching a diverse student body in a transformative learning environment, (2) developing a thriving portfolio of research and mentoring students, (3) participating in service activities at the academic, professional, and/or community levels, and (4) working toward greater equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility for all in the profession.

Appointment Type and Details

The position is a Tenure-Line Assistant Professor faculty appointment. Applicants must have the following:

  • Ph.D. in Communication Studies or Media Studies, or another closely related field, such as Journalism, Political Science, Sociology, History, Anthropology, or Technology Studies on or before August 2027 (Candidates who have not completed their Ph.D. should include evidence with their application that there is a workable timeline to completion prior to appointment).
  • Ability to teach introductory courses in communication theory, research, and media studies; upper division courses in the applicant's area of expertise; the senior research course for the major; and courses for our Digital Media, Cultures, and Industries (DMCI) minor
  • Evidence of an ongoing research agenda.
  • A demonstrated commitment to inclusive, student-centered education and to working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

Preference will be given to candidates engaged in a research agenda that focuses on media industries or media institutions. The ideal candidate will also have media production skills.

Candidates should have experience teaching research methods and theories native to Communication Studies. The new faculty member will be expected to teach introductory courses in communication theory, research, and media studies; upper division courses in the applicant's area of expertise; the senior research course for the major; and courses for our Digital Media, Cultures, and Industries (DMCI) minor.

Preference will be given to candidates who are best suited to help support the continued growth of our department’s media studies curriculum, digital media programming, and socially engaged media practice.

Position Responsibilities

Beyond teaching, the new faculty member will advise Communication Studies majors and Digital Media Culture and Industry Minors, contribute to curriculum assessment and development, participate in departmental, college, and university service, and help support the continued growth of Media Studies, digital media programming and socially engaged media practice.
