Description
As the Assistant Director of Operations, you will support the day-to-day execution of facility operations across receiving, production, post-production, finishing, quality, shipping, maintenance, safety, and facilities. . Working closely with the Director of Operations and department leadership, you will help ensure production priorities are executed consistently, departments remain aligned, and daily operations meet expectations for safety, quality, productivity, and customer service.
This role serves as an additional layer of operational leadership between the Director of Operations and department Managers and Supervisors, with a strong focus on daily execution and floor-level coordination. You will monitor operational performance, help resolve immediate production and workflow challenges, coordinate resources across departments and shifts, and reinforce established operational expectations.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can maintain visibility across a large operation while staying closely connected to daily activity on the floor. Success in this role requires strong follow-through, practical problem solving, communication, and the ability to help department leaders execute established priorities consistently.

What you’ll do
- Partner with the Director of Operations and department leaders to execute established production plans, maintenance priorities, safety initiatives, facility needs, and operational expectations.
- Maintain regular floor presence and visibility across operational departments and shifts to understand production status, equipment conditions, safety concerns, facility needs, emerging issues, and resource requirements.
- Monitor daily operational performance, including production output, throughput, labor utilization, quality, work-in-process, equipment availability, and on-time delivery.
- Work with Managers and Supervisors to address daily performance gaps and implement timely corrective actions.
- Coordinate activities between departments and shifts to improve workflow, handoffs, communication, and execution of production and facility priorities.
- Identify immediate bottlenecks, workflow disruptions, staffing gaps, equipment constraints, facility issues, and other barriers to execution and coordinate appropriate responses.
- Prioritize work of maintenance technicians on equipment repairs, preventive maintenance needs, downtime response, and other activities necessary to support equipment reliability and production continuity.
- Monitor significant equipment downtime and recurring equipment issues, helping coordinate resources, escalation, and communication to minimize operational disruption.
- Support facility readiness by identifying and coordinating resolution of issues involving building systems, utilities, work areas, grounds, infrastructure, and other facility needs that could affect safety or operations.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external vendors as appropriate to address maintenance, repair, and facility service needs.
- Reinforce established safety requirements and expectations across operational departments and ensure identified safety concerns are appropriately addressed or escalated.
- Partner with appropriate leaders and departments on safety initiatives, incident prevention, corrective actions, inspections, training, and continuous improvement of workplace safety.
- Ensure timely response to workplace incidents, hazards, near misses, equipment concerns, and unsafe conditions in accordance with established company procedures.
- Help ensure operational areas, equipment, and facilities are maintained in a safe, organized, functional, and production-ready condition.
- Coordinate short-term staffing and resource adjustments based on production volume, workload, absences, maintenance requirements, and changing operational priorities.
- Reinforce expectations with Managers and Supervisors regarding accountability, communication, production execution, safety, quality, equipment care, housekeeping, and employee leadership.
- Provide coaching and day-to-day support to Managers and Supervisors in resolving operational and employee performance challenges.
- Escalate significant operational, safety, maintenance, facility, or resource risks, recurring performance concerns, or issues requiring broader facility-level decisions to the Director of Operations.
- Support continuous improvement activities within operational departments.
- Use operational data to identify daily performance trends, communicate priorities, and support corrective action.
- Participate in cross-functional projects, facility improvements, equipment installations, and operational improvement initiatives as assigned.
- Collaborate with HR and leadership on staffing needs, interviewing, onboarding effectiveness, employee performance, safety training, and leadership development.
- Facilitate the rollout and adoption of new processes, equipment, systems, procedures, safety requirements, and operational changes.
- Provide operational leadership coverage across departments and shifts when needed to maintain continuity and execution.
- Reinforce consistent adherence to safety requirements, quality procedures, preventive maintenance expectations, standard work, operational processes, and company policies.
- Help foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, quality, equipment ownership, facility care, and continuous improvement.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive leadership experience in manufacturing, production, or operations.
- Demonstrated experience leading Supervisors, Managers, or multiple operational teams.
- Experience supporting operations across multiple departments, functions, or shifts.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing workflows, production processes, quality standards, and operational metrics.
- Experience using production data to identify performance gaps and drive improvement.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and implement practical solutions.
- Ability to manage multiple operational priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with employees, Supervisors, Managers, and senior leadership.
- Ability to coach leaders, reinforce expectations, and drive accountability while maintaining strong working relationships.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, or related software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in sheet metal, fabrication, or industrial manufacturing
- Experience in a high-volume, multi-shift manufacturing or production environment.
- Experience supporting 24/7 manufacturing operations.
- Experience coordinating operations across multiple departments or shifts.
- Experience supporting production growth, capacity increases, new equipment implementation, or operational expansion.
- Experience leading or participating in cross-functional continuous improvement projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in Operations Management, Engineering, Manufacturing, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Essential Physical Requirements
- Ability to move throughout office and manufacturing environments for extended periods
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs while conducting shop floor reviews
- Ability to visually inspect equipment, materials, and processes to assess quality and safety
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
- Ability to work in environments with noise, moving equipment, temperature variation, and industrial hazards while following safety protocols
Work Environment
- This role works across office and manufacturing environments and requires regular presence on the shop floor
- Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) when in manufacturing areas
- Exposure to noise, moving machinery, and metal materials
- This position requires working in close proximity to equipment that generates strong electromagnetic fields (EMF). This environment may pose a risk to individuals with cardiac pacemakers, ICDs, or other implantable medical devices.
