Engineering at Stord
Stord's software suite has grown fast over the last year, and we're just getting started. With a powerful fulfillment network, incredible reach, and top-tier brands, we have a real opportunity to transform a trillion-dollar market. We're hiring software engineers at every level across all of our product areas: Commerce, where we own the shopper's experience from checkout through delivery; our parcel network (TMS); fulfillment and warehouse systems (WMS); order management (OMS); Stord Labs, where we're working on automation and the future of AI; and the platform and AI infrastructure the rest of engineering builds on. That covers everything from shopper-facing experiences and customer-facing SaaS to the operational systems that move real inventory through real warehouses and onto real trucks.
What makes building software here different is what sits underneath it. Most software companies only see the screen. Our software runs on top of the network that actually picks, packs, and ships the orders, so we get to build with real operational data and see the impact of what we ship in the physical world.
This posting isn't tied to a single team or level. Commerce and supply chain experience are a big plus, but what matters most to us is how you work: how much you own, how you handle ambiguity, and how well you build in an AI-accelerated environment. As you go through the interview process, we'll align you with the team and level that best fit your skills and interests, rather than locking you into a set path on day one.
How We Build
We build with agents. Our engineers use AI coding agents to take work from requirements through planning, coding, testing, and deployment, and they own the result. Owning your work doesn't mean doing it alone. You'll work closely with product managers, designers, and the other engineers on your team, and partner with other teams whenever the work crosses boundaries.
We also believe in product-centered engineering. Engineers here don't just build what they're told; they shape where the product goes. You'll influence specs, push back on the wrong solution, and spot opportunities the roadmap hasn't caught yet. We're looking for engineers with a strong sense of ownership, who care deeply about the customer, and who want real influence over what we build.
What You'll Own
- Take features from idea to production with your team, using AI coding agents to plan, build, test, and deploy
- Give agents the right context, direct their work, and review their output critically. You're accountable for the quality of what ships, not the model
- Own what you ship after launch: monitor it, fix it, and keep improving it
- Shape specs with Product and Design, bringing a technical view on feasibility and trade-offs
- Partner with engineers on other teams to design integrations, align on shared patterns, and deliver work that spans more than one system
- Design and maintain scalable, reliable, and secure systems that stay simple and maintainable as they grow
- Get close enough to what your software supports (a checkout flow, a carrier integration, a warehouse floor) to know where it breaks before a customer tells you
- Raise the bar for the engineers around you through code reviews, design reviews, and sharing the agentic workflows that make the team faster
How scope grows with level
- Software Engineer: You own well-defined features end to end and grow quickly toward owning larger parts of a product
- Senior Software Engineer: You own significant features and systems from idea to production, influence your team's technical direction, and mentor other engineers
- Staff Software Engineer: You're the technical lead for a team or area. You own the architecture, lead initiatives that span teams, set the standard for how the team builds with agents, and grow senior engineers into stronger technical decision-makers
What You'll Need
- 3 to 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and running production software
- Hands-on experience building software with agentic workflows: using AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) to take work from requirements through planning, coding, testing, and deployment
- A solid grasp of agentic development basics: giving agents good context, breaking work into plans, and verifying output instead of trusting it
- Strong engineering fundamentals: system design, data modeling, APIs, testing, and debugging in production
- The ability to work confidently in our core languages with agents. Our product teams build mostly in TypeScript (Node.js and React) and Elixir/Phoenix. If your background is in another language, we're open to it
- Ownership and follow-through: you take pride in what you ship and see it from design to production
- Clear communication with engineers, product managers, operators, and stakeholders about technical decisions and trade-offs
- Comfort with ambiguity: you can take a fuzzy problem and turn it into shipped software without waiting for every detail to be defined
Nice-to-Haves
- Commerce or supply chain experience: checkout, payments, order management, notifications, returns, or warehouse and transportation systems (WMS, TMS, OMS)
- Production experience with TypeScript, Node.js, and React, or with Elixir/Phoenix
- Experience building and shipping LLM-powered features in production: prompt design, tool/function calling, context management, and evaluation
- Experience building chat agents or assistants integrated with MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers
- Experience with GCP, PostgreSQL, and event streaming (Kafka, Redpanda, or similar)
- Experience at a product-led company (consumer or B2B SaaS, marketplace, fintech, etc.)
- Experience building 0-to-1 products, or rebuilding or migrating a legacy platform
- Contributions to open-source projects
What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)
- You've shipped meaningful work to production and owned it from idea through deployment
- Your team sees you as someone who makes things happen, not someone who waits for a ticket
- You understand the product and operation behind your area well enough to have an opinion on where it breaks
- You're working confidently with agents in our codebase and sharing what works with the rest of the team
