Right to Repair Short-Term Campaigner
Application Deadline: 4 December 2026
Department: Program
Employment Type: Seasonal - Full Time
Location: Boston, MA
Compensation: $40,000 / year
Description
PIRG is looking for campaigners to join our Right to Repair campaign and work with us to stand up for the public’s right to fix their own products and push back against the waste problems driven by intentionally disposable electronics. This is a four-month campaign position where you can make a real impact on an important issue, and also learn more about advocacy and organizing to help you decide if a career in this field is right for you.
We should be able to fix our stuff when it breaks. We need easy access to the information, tools, resources and third party repair shops it takes to fix our cell phones, appliances, electronics and other equipment. That means working together to get the companies who make our stuff, to give us the right to repair our stuff. When they do, it will be better for the planet, better for our budgets, and things will work the way they are supposed to.
Key Responsibilities
- Educate and mobilize public support: Conduct online and in-person outreach to educate the public on Right to Repair and ways to get involved.
- Organize events and work with volunteers: Organize webinars, community events and public meetings. Recruit organizations and members of the public to attend and participate.
- Build powerful coalitions: Reach out to a broad range of organizations and affected constituency groups across the political spectrum to build support for Right to Repair and ending planned obsolescence.
- Get our story out to as many people as possible: Organize news conferences and write opinion pieces. Build a following on social media for your campaign, and organize influencers and others to show their support for the Right to Repair.
- Write articles and tell Right to Repair stories: Help us build awareness about Right to Repair by writing original articles for our website, and collecting powerful testimonials about the importance of repair.
Qualifications
Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply. Though we expect you to take on real responsibility and run with it, we provide training on advocacy and organizing skills, as well as oversight by an experienced advocate. We are looking for candidates with leadership experience, top-notch writing and public speaking skills, an eagerness to learn, and are ready for a challenge.
