Avalara is accelerating the modernization and AI-enablement of its compliance platform to support expanding product complexity, global growth, and high transaction volumes.

We are seeking a Software Development Engineer to serve as a technical anchor and Bar Raiser within a globally distributed engineering organization. This role exists to deliver reliable full-stack capabilities, modernize distributed systems, strengthen engineering practices, and lead the practical adoption of AI across software delivery workflows.

The successful candidate will directly improve delivery speed, platform resilience, operational excellence, and engineering standards, while contributing to scalable customer-facing capabilities across Avalara’s compliance platform.

This Software Development Engineer will elevate Avalara across three dimensions:

• For the Business: Accelerate delivery while reducing operational risk, enabling the platform to scale across products, customers, jurisdictions, and transaction volumes.
• For the Team: Raise engineering standards through technical leadership, rigorous code reviews, automated testing, mentorship, and practical AI adoption.
• For the Customer: Improve availability, performance, reliability, and product quality, ensuring dependable compliance experiences for customers globally.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

• Architect, build, and maintain scalable, secure backend services and APIs using .NET and C#, as well as modern web applications using React and TypeScript.
• Design and operate resilient distributed systems using REST and GraphQL service contracts, with sound approaches to scalability, security, and maintainability.
• Embed AI-assisted coding, automated test generation, documentation, refactoring, and architectural analysis into daily engineering workflows to measurably improve velocity and quality.
• Contribute to AI-enabled product capabilities that improve automation, data processing, customer efficiency, or operational insight.
• Design for high availability and operational excellence using proactive monitoring, distributed tracing, metrics, logging, and actionable alerting.
• Lead incident investigation and root-cause analysis; implement preventative improvements that reduce recurrence and improve mean time to recovery.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, release quality, and automated test coverage using GitLab CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure as Code.
• Lead technical design discussions, evaluate trade-offs, define service contracts, and reduce technical debt in partnership with Product, Architecture, and engineering stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers, provide constructive peer feedback, participate in interview panels, and raise team standards for ownership, quality, and accountability.
• Collaborate effectively with global engineering, product, and business stakeholders in English.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful

Required Qualifications

• Strong English communication skills, written and verbal, for collaboration with globally distributed teams.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, developing, and operating production-grade enterprise software.
• Strong hands-on experience with .NET and C# building scalable, resilient APIs and microservices.
• Solid experience with React, TypeScript, and modern frontend development practices.
• Experience designing and operating distributed systems and RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs.
• Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and production cloud environments.
• Experience configuring and optimizing CI/CD pipelines, such as GitLab CI/CD.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code, preferably Terraform.
• Solid understanding of relational database design, querying, and performance tuning; experience with SQL Server and/or PostgreSQL is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of automated testing strategies, including unit, integration, end-to-end, and contract testing.
• Demonstrated experience using AI tools to improve measurable engineering or business outcomes.

Preferred Experience

• Experience with multi-tenant SaaS, enterprise-scale, compliance, financial, or other regulated platforms.
• Experience with high-volume transaction processing systems.
• Experience with observability technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki.
• Experience participating in disaster recovery design, operational readiness, or cloud-native resilience exercises.
• Experience leading cross-team technical initiatives.
