Description

STV is seeking an experienced Communications Director to join the firm’s award-winning communications team. This position will work with our Transportation North and Program Management/Construction Management (PM/CM) team. This position is designated as hybrid (3 days/week in office) and will be located in our New York, NY office.

This position will report to the head of content. The position will be a dual coach-player role where you will lead integrated communications and digital marketing strategy and execution for two of the firm’s largest and fastest-growing businesses, focused on transportation projects in the firm’s north region, as well as projects across the nation where STV leads as the program management/construction management consultant.

This role is ideal for a communications professional who enjoys operating at the intersection of infrastructure, media, public policy and executive visibility – helping tell the stories behind projects that shape how communities move, connect and grow.

The ideal candidate is:

  • A strategic storyteller with a strong PR/media relations background who can identify and pitch newsworthy stories, position executives as industry thought leaders and develop communications strategies that strengthen STV's reputation among clients, policymakers and other key stakeholders. They have a deep familiarity with major media markets, especially in New York City, and a proven ability to translate complex topics into timely and engaging stories
  • An infrastructure enthusiast who enjoys geeking out on how projects get done and what infrastructure is needed to make communities run efficiently and effectively. They understand the dynamics public policy and public opinion play in shaping some of the nation’s most significant public infrastructure programs and can build effective campaigns accordingly.
  • A skilled project manager with strong organizational, project management and stakeholder management abilities. They can work independently, manage multiple priorities and identify opportunities proactively.
  • An experienced communicator with a background in journalism, public relations, public affairs or corporate communications. PR/marketing agency or public information officer experience is preferred.

Responsibilities for this role include:

Strategy Responsibilities

  • Developing communications and digital marketing strategies to support business goals
  • Cultivating relationships with local, regional and national media covering transportation, infrastructure, government, business and real estate.
  • Elevating the visibility of STV’s projects and experts to increase brand awareness
  • Monitoring industry and policy developments and recommending proactive communications opportunities.
  • Tracking project milestones, industry events, awards programs and speaking opportunities that support strategic communications and business goals.

Client Service Responsibilities

  • Partnering with business leaders to identify project milestones, innovations and industry trends that can generate media interest.
  • Positioning key thought leaders to support pursuits and build client relationships
  • Identifying opportunities to position STV executives and technical leaders through media interviews, bylined articles, speaking engagements, owned social media content and industry commentary.
  • Collaborating with business leaders to provide advice and counsel before and during crises

Teamwork Responsibilities

  • Coordinating with communications team members to drive efficient and effective execution and amplify key stories with strategic paid, earned, owned and social media campaigns.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Drafting press releases, media pitches, talking points, project announcements and executive communications materials.
  • Generating content for both internal and external audiences that aligns with STV’s Strategic Plan, elevates STV's visibility and drives towards other communications goals

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in public relations, communications, journalism, media relations or public affairs.
  • Demonstrated success securing earned media coverage and building relationships with reporters and editors.
  • Familiarity with top 10 media markets.
  • Understanding of transportation, infrastructure, government and/or public-sector issues.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, interviewing and storytelling skills.
  • Proficiency in AI usage, particularly Microsoft Copilot
  • Existing relationships with transportation, infrastructure, government, business or regional media outlets strongly preferred.
  • Agency, journalism or public affairs experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, English or a related field preferred.

Compensation Range:

$149,671.54 - $171,053.19

STV offers the following benefits • Health insurance, including an option with a Health Savings Account • Dental insurance • Vision insurance • Flexible Spending Accounts (Healthcare, Dependent Care and Transit and Parking where applicable) • Disability insurance • Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment • 401(k) Plan • Retirement Counseling • Employee Assistance Program • Paid Time Off (starting at 16 days) • Paid Holidays (9 days) • Back-Up Dependent Care (up to 10 days per year) • Parental Leave (up to 80 hours) • Continuing Education Program • Professional Licensure and Society Memberships

STV is committed to paying all of its employees in a fair, equitable, and transparent manner. The listed pay range is STV’s good-faith salary estimate for this position. Please note that the final salary offered for this position may be outside of this published range based on many factors, including but not limited to geography, education, experience, and/or certifications.

Not sure this role is the perfect match? We encourage you to apply if STV’s work and values resonate with you. We know great candidates don’t always meet every qualification, and research shows women and people of color are less likely to apply unless they do. At STV, we believe strong talent comes from a wide range of backgrounds, and your skills and experience may align with this or another opportunity as we continue to grow.
