The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor this position is responsible for carrying out a caseload of offenders, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering, and following up on offender questions and problems.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Providing recommendations to the classification committee.
• Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinating major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as offender work assignments, work release, education or recreation.
• Planning and coordinating transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.
• This is a certified position, and employees may be subject to assist in any certified capacity as needed, which includes the Custody and Administrative Services.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade Range: $37,377.00 - $65,408.00

  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Experience with counseling and/ or supporting therapeutic goals preferably in a correctional environment

  • Documented experience with coordination of projects or administration

  • Background experience with customer services

    About The Location:

    This position is located at Pamlico Correctional Institution in Bayboro, NC. This is a medium custody facility housing approximately 750 male offenders.

    About The Division of Institutions:

    The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

    Note to Current State Employees:

    The salary grade for this position is NC07.  State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.  Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.

    Education Equivalency Verification

    The State of North Carolina/Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) uses the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) as a referral resource for applicants who need to have their credentials certified as equivalent.

    Veterans’ and National Guard Preference

    Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution

    OR

    High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety

    OR

    an equivalent combination of training and experience

    Necessary Special Qualifications

    Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
