The Communications Coordinator serves as the City's lead communications project coordinator, responsible for planning, developing, and executing content that strengthens public trust, promotes transparency, and communicates City initiatives, services, programs, and priorities.


This position will help coordinate the workflow of communications projects from concept through completion and ensures messaging is accurate, timely, engaging, and consistent with the City's brand and strategic objectives.


This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.  


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the primary coordinator for communications projects, ensuring work progresses efficiently from planning through execution.
  • Collaborates with City departments to identify communications opportunities and develop effective messaging strategies.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes multiple communications projects simultaneously while balancing competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Develops engaging digital content across websites, email newsletters, social media platforms, YouTube, and emerging communications channels.
  • Maintains the City's websites by ensuring content is accurate, timely, accessible, and user focused.
  • Develops and maintains editorial calendars supporting proactive communications planning.
  • Supports public information efforts during emergencies, service interruptions, major events, and other time-sensitive situations.
  • Serves as the communications liaison for City departments, building relationships that encourage proactive planning, collaboration, and effective storytelling.
  • Coordinates development of graphics, publications, presentations, advertising, signage, and other communications materials.
  • Collaborates with other communications staff to develop integrated multimedia communications.
  • Ensures all communications materials maintain consistent branding, messaging, and visual identity.
  • Serves as a resource to communications staff by sharing technical expertise, promoting collaboration, and helping maintain quality standards.
  • Researches emerging communications trends, technologies, and best practices and recommends innovative solutions.
  • Analyzes communications effectiveness through websites, social media, and marketing data.
  • Develops reports and recommendations that improve public engagement and communications performance.

Additional Duties:

  • Performs general administrative/office duties as required.
  • Maintains any assigned equipment in safe and good operating condition.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, sound judgment, and exceptional customer service.
  • Maintains confidentiality and exercises discretion when handling sensitive information.
  • Adheres to Employee Handbook and other relevant policies and procedures.  
  • Maintains regular and dependable attendance.
  • Occasionally works evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency activations.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.


Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, M-F; with additional hours as needed


Salary: Minimum $70,326; Compensation will be determined based on experience, skills and qualifications.

Requirements

EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE - REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Mass Communications, Digital Media, Graphic Design, or a closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of progressive professional experience in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, public information, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
  • Experience coordinating communications projects with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
  • Experience creating content for websites, social media, email marketing, print publications, and other digital communications platforms i.e. multimedia production, graphic design and photography
  • Working knowledge of media relations and public information practices.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, Microsoft 365, website content management systems, and digital communications tools.
  • Strong knowledge of AP Style and communications best practices.
  • Experience using analytics to evaluate communications effectiveness.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Must possess a valid state-issued drivers’ license.

  • Experience working in municipal government or another public-sector organization.
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional communications projects.
  • Experience with crisis communications or emergency public information.
