Position Summary
St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica School is seeking a faithful, joyful, organized, and mission-driven educator to serve as the Second Grade Homeroom Teacher and Third Grade Literature Teacher. As a Catholic school undergoing renewal as a Classical Catholic institution, we strive to cultivate students who love truth, goodness, and beauty while developing strong academic and spiritual foundations.
The successful candidate will teach second-grade English Language Arts, Mathematics, History, and Science, while also providing Literature instruction for third-grade students. The ideal candidate loves working with young children, values structure and order, and is committed to fostering academic excellence and virtue within a Christ-centered environment.
Essential Functions
Instruction & Curriculum
- Teach second-grade English, Literature, Mathematics, History, and Science.
- Teach third-grade Literature as part of the school's instructional program.
- Deliver structured instruction in grammar, composition, spelling, handwriting, reading, and language mechanics.
- Reinforce phonics and reading fluency skills as needed.
- Build foundational writing skills through copywork, dictation, sentence formation, and guided composition.
- Utilize the Singapore Math approach or participate in training to implement its philosophy and methods.
- Foster conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and mathematical fluency.
- Teach history and science through engaging lessons that encourage curiosity, exploration, and wonder.
- Integrate Catholic faith and Classical educational principles throughout instruction.
Student Formation & Classroom Management
- Create and maintain a peaceful, orderly, and joyful classroom environment.
- Model and teach virtues such as charity, diligence, honesty, humility, obedience, and perseverance.
- Incorporate daily prayer, Scripture, and the lives of the saints into classroom life.
- Establish clear routines, expectations, and classroom procedures.
- Foster responsibility, attentiveness, respect, and self-discipline in students.
- Supervise students during assigned school activities, including arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, Mass, and special events.
Assessment & Communication
- Prepare engaging and organized lesson plans aligned with curriculum goals.
- Assess student learning through assignments, observations, discussions, quizzes, and formal evaluations.
- Maintain accurate academic, attendance, and behavioral records.
- Provide timely feedback to students and families.
- Communicate professionally and regularly with parents regarding student progress and classroom expectations.
- Identify and support students requiring intervention, enrichment, or additional assistance.
Professional Responsibilities
- Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and required school events.
- Participate in school Masses, liturgical celebrations, and community activities.
- Engage in ongoing formation related to Classical Catholic education and instructional best practices.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal.
Requirements
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Elementary Education, Liberal Arts, or a related field.
- Commitment to supporting the mission and values of Catholic education.
- Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and parents.
Preferred
- Texas teaching certification.
- Experience teaching elementary-aged students.
- Knowledge of phonics-based literacy instruction.
- Familiarity with Singapore Math or willingness to be trained.
- Experience with or appreciation for Classical Catholic education.
